Is cranberry juice safe for cats?
There is no established reason to offer cranberry juice to a cat, and the evidence does not establish a safe serving amount. Juice products vary, and products made for people may contain added ingredients; don’t assume a human beverage is suitable for a cat. The available veterinary guidance does not establish that plain cranberry juice is inherently toxic, either, so avoid both blanket claims that it is poisonous and claims that it is a safe or useful treatment.

PetMD advises against using cranberry juice or cranberry products marketed for cats to treat urinary tract infections: effectiveness has not been established, and changing urine pH may contribute to complications such as crystals or stones. This guidance does not prove that every cranberry ingredient or formulation has the same effect. PetMD’s guidance on UTIs in cats is about treatment, not a universal toxicity finding.

The Merck Veterinary Manual describes preliminary evidence that cranberry extract may reduce lower urinary tract signs in some cats. That limited finding concerns an extract—not cranberry juice—and does not establish a dose, show that juice works, or mean a supplement is appropriate for an individual cat. Merck’s overview of lower urinary tract disease in cats does not recommend juice as a home treatment.

Ask your veterinarian before giving a supplement. Cornell cautions that supplements can be harmful and advises getting veterinary approval first. This is especially important if your cat has a urinary diagnosis, eats a prescribed diet, or takes medication; compatibility with every treatment plan has not been established. Cornell’s feeding guidance also discusses supplements.
Urinary signs need assessment, not juice
Lower urinary tract signs are not a diagnosis. Cornell lists several possible causes, including idiopathic cystitis, stones, infection, and obstruction. A veterinarian may start with an examination and urinalysis and may need additional tests to find the cause. Treating signs at home with juice can delay that assessment.

Contact a veterinarian about these signs
- Straining or apparent pain while urinating
- Frequent attempts to urinate or crying while urinating
- Blood in the urine
- Urinating outside the litter box
- Frequent licking of the genital area
Little or no urine is an emergency
If your cat is straining but passing little or no urine, seems increasingly distressed, or may have a blockage, go to an emergency veterinarian immediately. Cornell states: “A urethral obstruction is an absolute emergency, requiring immediate veterinary treatment.” Do not wait to see whether juice helps. Cornell’s Feline Lower Urinary Tract Disease guidance describes the signs and urgency.
What can support water intake?
Water intake is a separate concern from diagnosing or treating urinary disease. Cornell says canned cat food has a moisture content of at least 75% and can be a good dietary source of water; cats should also have clean, fresh water available. A fountain may encourage some cats to drink, but it does not identify the cause of symptoms or treat urinary disease. Cornell’s cat-feeding guidance covers moisture and water access. Petco’s veterinary answer likewise suggests increasing water consumption, including with a pet fountain; it was dated October 24, 2017, and the page listing showed an update on September 23, 2025. If your cat already drank cranberry juice
Check the product label and estimate how much your cat drank, then contact your veterinarian for advice tailored to the product and your cat. Seek prompt veterinary help if urinary signs or other concerning symptoms occur. Because formulations vary and a universal safe amount has not been established, do not use a general serving-size rule or give more as a remedy.
