Some Earth animals look so unfamiliar that “alien” feels like a natural comparison. The label describes their appearance, not their origin: the best-documented examples here are deep-sea animals, including a newly described sponge, a shark with a forward-thrusting jaw, and expedition sightings whose exact species or range is not fully established. Four examples can be described responsibly from the available evidence; that evidence does not support a reliable list of ten.
Why some Earth animals look alien
Deep-sea animals are encountered in environments that are difficult to observe, and their unusual shapes can seem otherworldly to people seeing them for the first time. But a striking appearance is not evidence of an extraterrestrial origin, and an expedition sighting at one location does not establish an animal’s full geographic range.
Here are the examples for which the available sources support a useful description and a suitably qualified note about where they were found.
Creatures with an alien-like appearance
E.T. sponge (Advhena magnifica)
This deep-sea sponge’s two openings prompted its E.T. nickname. NOAA says it was unknown to science until an individual was collected during the 2016 Deepwater Exploration of the Marianas and formally described and named. NOAA places an exploration site nearly 850 miles southwest of Hawai‘i; that is expedition-site context, not a map of the sponge’s complete range. NOAA’s deepwater identification guide and account of the exploration document the find.

Goblin shark (Mitsukurina owstoni)
The goblin shark’s distinctive profile is paired with a jaw that can protrude during prey capture, as described by Smithsonian Ocean. The Natural History Museum reports a usual depth range of 274–1,310 metres. These sources support describing it as a deep-water shark, but do not establish its complete geographic distribution. The Natural History Museum’s goblin shark account gives the depth range.
Bigfin squid
NOAA expedition imagery draws attention to the bigfin squid’s unusually long appendages and bent posture—features that make it look unlike the familiar image of a squid. NOAA’s material documents an expedition observation, not a complete global range, so the sighting should not be taken as proof that the animal is found only there or throughout a wider region. NOAA’s expedition page provides the observation context.

Ghostly octopod
NOAA has documented a pale, ghostly-looking deep-sea octopod and discussed how little is known about it. The available account does not verify the animal as a formally named species, so it is more accurate to call it an octopod observed on an expedition than to assign it a species name or a settled range. NOAA’s expedition coverage describes the sighting.

The title’s number would suggest ten well-supported examples, each with a sourced note about where it is found. The evidence available here does not establish that many distinct creatures with reliable habitat or range information. Adding six more would risk turning isolated observations into range claims or presenting uncertain identifications as named species. The four examples above are the ones that can be described with the qualifications the sources support.
