Common croton (Codiaeum variegatum) can irritate a cat’s mouth and digestive tract if eaten; its sap may also irritate skin. Drooling, vomiting, and diarrhea are possible. Move your cat away from the plant and contact a veterinarian or animal poison-control service promptly—do not induce vomiting or give a home remedy unless a professional tells you to.
How toxic is croton to cats?
Pet Poison Helpline identifies common croton as Codiaeum variegatum, also called fire croton, garden croton, or variegated croton. The plant-specific entry describes ingestion as causing mild oral and gastrointestinal irritation. That is a general description, not a guarantee that an individual cat’s reaction will be mild: risk can depend on the amount eaten, the cat’s size, allergies, and other factors.

“Croton” is a common name and may be used for more than one plant, so confirm the species if possible. Pet Poison Helpline does not provide a croton-specific toxic dose, symptom-onset timetable, severity percentage, or symptom-duration estimate. A veterinarian or poison-control professional can assess the actual exposure; an online overview cannot determine an individual cat’s risk. Pet Poison Helpline’s croton entry is the primary plant-specific reference.

If sap gets on the skin
Sap from croton leaves, stems, or roots may cause minor skin irritation. If you see plant sap on your cat, remove visible material if you can do so safely and ask a veterinary professional what further steps are appropriate.
What to do if your cat chewed a croton leaf
- Move your cat away from the plant. Check whether your cat is breathing normally and acting as usual.
- Remove visible plant material if safe. Check the mouth, fur, or skin, but do not put yourself or your cat at risk trying to remove material.
- Do not try a home treatment. Do not give a home antidote or induce vomiting unless a veterinarian or animal poison-control professional instructs you to. Pet Poison Helpline states: “Do NOT induce vomiting without consulting a vet or Pet Poison Helpline®.”
- Call for prompt advice. Contact your veterinarian or an animal poison-control service and describe what happened. If your cat is having trouble breathing or appears seriously unwell, seek urgent veterinary care.
- Help identify the plant. If the species is uncertain, keep a photo or sample. Bring plant material if you take your cat to a clinic.

How to reduce the chance of another exposure
Keep croton out of your cat’s reach or remove it from a shared home. If you want a replacement houseplant, a veterinary-reviewed Vet Desk article lists spider plant (Chlorophytum comosum) as cat-friendly and harmless to cats. That is secondary guidance, not a reason to let a cat eat plants freely; identify any plant correctly and keep it from being chewed. The Vet Desk’s cat-friendly indoor plant guide was last updated October 29, 2025, and lists Genevieve Dugal as author and Marta Vidal-Abarca, BVSc GPCert (Ophthal) MRCVS, as reviewer.
