Are black cats really bad luck? The Natural History Museum’s answer is “Absolutely not!” Luck attached to black cats is folklore, and it varies by place. Some traditions cast them as unlucky; others associate them with love, prosperity or good fortune. None is a prediction—and a cat’s coat color does not determine its personality.
Why are black cats linked with bad luck?
The Natural History Museum traces a European rumor that the devil could take the form of a black cat to the 1200s. HISTORY points to a written association between black cats and the occult in the 13th century, including Pope Gregory IX’s 1233 papal bull Vox in Rama. That provides historical context, not proof that a single decree created a universal superstition. HISTORY also notes that why the witch association became specifically attached to black cats is not entirely clear.
Where are black cats considered lucky?
Beliefs differ across communities; there is no single worldwide view. Best Friends Animal Society describes several positive traditions: in Japan, black cats have been linked with love and fortune; in Scotland, a black cat on the doorstep is associated with prosperity; and in a French tradition, treating a black cat kindly is connected with riches. The National Library of Medicine’s historical collections also notes positive black-cat traditions in England and Japan. These are cultural stories, not evidence that a cat can bring or take away luck.
Does folklore affect black-cat adoption?
Research on shelter adoption does not give one universal answer. A peer-reviewed article, “Explicit and Implicit Measures of Black Cat Bias in Cat and Dog People,” describes mixed findings: some studies reported longer shelter stays for black or dark-coated cats, while other research did not find that black cats stayed longer.

The article summarizes two shelter studies that found differences in time to adoption:
- In an analysis of adoption records for more than 29,000 cats at one U.S. shelter, primarily black cats took about 2.25 days longer on average to be adopted than cats that were not primarily black.
- At another shelter, black kittens took about four days longer, and black adult cats almost six days longer, than comparison cats.
Those figures describe particular shelters and analyses; they are not estimates for all cats or shelters. The article discusses possible confounders, including how common different coat colors were in a shelter population and the possibility that perceptions could influence surrender or adoption. The findings do not show that superstition alone causes any difference.

The article also reports a small repeated-measures study of 37 people, mostly self-identified dog people, in which implicit black-cat bias was about 40% larger close to Halloween. That result applies to this small study group, not to the general population, and does not establish how bias affects shelter outcomes.

No reliable personality judgment follows from a cat’s coat color. Best Friends Animal Society emphasizes that cats are individuals. If you are considering adoption, get to know the cat in front of you and ask about its temperament, needs and how it might fit your household rather than choosing or rejecting it based on fur color.

How to think about black-cat luck stories
- Treat luck claims as folklore, not as facts about what will happen to you or a cat.
- Remember that traditions vary: a belief attached to black cats in one place may not be shared elsewhere.
- Judge an individual cat by its behavior and needs, not by a superstition or its coat.
