What happened in Brooklyn?
The Associated Press reported that MSC Meraviglia arrived at the Port of Brooklyn on May 4, 2024, with the whale on its bow. NOAA Fisheries identified the animal as a sei whale, and the reported length was 44 feet (about 13 meters). MSC Cruises said it notified authorities and that the whale was being examined.
The carcass was moved from the port to Sandy Hook, New Jersey, for better access to equipment. A necropsy, or post-mortem examination, was conducted there on May 7.
What did investigators find?
The incident report says the necropsy was conducted and samples were collected. NOAA Fisheries spokesperson Andrea Gomez said the samples would help biologists determine whether the whale was already dead when it was struck by the ship. The report does not provide a final answer to that question or a definitive cause of death.

NOAA explains that necropsy samples may be analyzed over weeks to months. That general guidance does not establish the outcome of this particular examination.
Was the whale killed by the cruise ship?
The sources reviewed do not establish that MSC Meraviglia caused the whale’s death. The investigation was examining whether the whale was already dead when it was struck. The purpose of collecting samples should not be mistaken for a reported conclusion.

It is supported to say the whale was found on the ship’s bow and investigators examined whether it was alive when struck. It is not supported by the reviewed incident report to state as fact that the ship killed the whale or to assert a final official cause of death.
Why sei whales and the New York Bight matter
NOAA Fisheries lists sei whales as endangered under the Endangered Species Act and depleted under the Marine Mammal Protection Act. NOAA also identifies ship collisions as a threat that conservation work seeks to reduce.

New York State’s Department of Environmental Conservation reported that passive acoustic monitoring detected sei whales in all months of the year during 2017–2020, with a strong spring peak from March through May. Its 2025 species assessment described the May 2024 carcass as the only sei whale stranding record in New York since 2015 in the records it reviewed. These are findings from that assessment, not a current tally.
NOAA’s general vessel-safety guidance is to keep whales and vessels apart where possible and, where that is not possible, slow down and keep a lookout. NOAA also notes that vessel strikes can go unnoticed and unreported. This guidance is not a finding about the conduct of MSC Meraviglia in this incident.

What MSC Cruises said
In a statement quoted by the Associated Press, MSC Cruises said: “We immediately notified the relevant authorities, who are now conducting an examination of the whale.” The company also said: “We are deeply saddened by the loss of any marine life.” These statements do not establish what caused the whale’s death.
