The report said at least two dogs had died, but the accounts did not confirm that sea hares caused either death. What was the warning about?
The suspected hazard was a sea hare, a marine mollusc that PerthNow described as a squid-like animal that can be concealed in seaweed. Vetwest, as quoted in the report, warned that these creatures carry toxins harmful enough to kill a dog. The report says symptoms may develop quickly.

The warning followed accounts of dogs becoming ill after beach visits, including at Hillarys dog beach. One owner said their dog became unwell roughly 30 minutes after a visit and that the cause was unknown; the owner relayed that a veterinarian thought a bite might have caused anaphylactic shock. What should I do if my dog eats or mouths a sea hare?
- Contact a veterinarian immediately if you suspect your dog has eaten, licked or bitten a sea hare or another unidentified washed-up animal. PerthNow’s report gives this as the advice for suspected poisoning.
- Tell the vet what happened and when. If you can do so safely, describe the animal and your dog’s symptoms. Do not handle an unknown marine animal to identify it.
- Follow the veterinarian’s directions. Do not rely on human bite-and-sting first-aid instructions for a dog’s possible sea-hare poisoning.

What symptoms were reported?
PerthNow, attributing the warning to Vetwest, listed signs that may develop quickly:
- Over-excitement
- Tremors
- Seizures
- Drooling
- Vomiting
The owner accounts in the same report also described disorientation and difficulty walking. These signs do not establish sea-hare poisoning or identify its cause. If your dog is unwell after possible contact with a washed-up animal, seek veterinary advice immediately.

What is known—and not known—about the reported deaths?
PerthNow reported at least two dog deaths following beach visits, but its individual accounts did not establish that either dog encountered a sea hare or died from sea-hare toxins. One owner said the cause was unknown and relayed a veterinarian’s suspicion that a bite could have triggered anaphylactic shock. The report is a warning based on reported cases, not a confirmed case series or a measure of how often dogs are affected.
What does the WA Government say about sea hares?
A Government of Western Australia release says sea hares are molluscs, can grow up to 60 centimetres, are toxic and are dangerous to dogs if consumed. It also says they do not pose a threat to human health. This supports taking possible ingestion seriously, but it does not independently verify the 2025 Perth dog cases. How does the Augusta beaching differ from the Perth warning?
The government release describes thousands of dead sea hares washing up at Hardy Inlet in Augusta in February 2021. Investigators reported that water quality conditions were fairly standard and that several weeks of unusually persistent strong easterly winds likely helped currents concentrate the animals and push them ashore. That explanation concerns the historic Augusta beaching; it should not be assumed to explain the Perth incidents.
The PerthNow report is from September 2025. It does not establish that sea hares are currently present on any particular Perth beach or that an official warning remains in force. For present-day conditions, check current local council and veterinary information.
