A deep-sea jellyfish’s two body forms and their recorded distributions have led researchers to propose a possible, semi-permeable biogeographic boundary in the North Atlantic. The evidence points to a pattern—not a physical wall, or proof that the animals cannot cross the ocean.
What jellyfish are researchers studying?
The animal is Botrynema brucei ellinorae, a subspecies of trachymedusan jellyfish. Researchers describe two forms: one has a distinctive knob at the top of its bell, and the other does not. Both forms are recorded in Arctic and sub-Arctic regions.

The University of Western Australia (UWA) account describes the North Atlantic Drift region as extending from the Grand Banks off Newfoundland east toward north-western Europe. It reports that knobless specimens had not been found south of this region, while the knobbed form has been recorded farther south. The researchers considered historical observations, photographic records and genetic analyses. UWA reports genetic links between Arctic and sub-Arctic specimens of both forms and knobbed specimens found in the subtropical western Atlantic. The combination is striking: jellyfish with different observed forms occur in different parts of the Atlantic, even though the specimens show strong genetic similarities.

Study lead author Javier Montenegro, of UWA’s School of Biological Sciences and Minderoo-UWA Deep-Sea Research Centre, said the shape differences despite genetic similarities above and below 47 degrees north “hint at the existence of an unknown deep-sea bio-geographic barrier in the Atlantic Ocean.” The wording matters: the researchers interpret a distributional pattern as a clue to a possible boundary, not as direct observation of a barrier.
Is the Atlantic barrier confirmed?
No. It is a hypothesis based on recorded distributions, body form and genetic similarities. The evidence described by UWA does not establish a physical obstruction, prove that jellyfish cannot cross the Atlantic, or measure how often either form moves between regions.

UWA presents the proposed boundary as potentially semi-permeable: the knobless form might remain north of the Drift region while the knobbed form travels farther south. Montenegro suggested that the knob could provide a selective advantage against predators outside Arctic and sub-Arctic waters. That is a possible explanation, not a demonstrated function of the knob.
What does the later Florida specimen add?
A separate NOAA account, published in September 2025, describes a knobbed B. brucei ellinorae collected near Florida at 999 meters during the 2019 Windows to the Deep expedition aboard NOAA Ship Okeanos Explorer. NOAA says the find challenged the assumption that the subspecies was restricted to Arctic and sub-Arctic waters. This Florida record adds evidence about the subspecies’ range; it does not confirm the proposed North Atlantic Drift barrier. The possible role of the Deep Western Boundary Current in carrying a specimen south is a separate explanation from the hypothesis that the distribution of knobless and knobbed forms reflects a semi-permeable boundary.

The study is identified as a 2025 paper in volume 223 of Deep Sea Research Part I: Oceanographic Research Papers, DOI 10.1016/j.dsr.2025.104551. The available accounts do not provide a population total or a rate of barrier crossing, so neither can be inferred from the reported pattern.
