A 2025 study proposes that arsenic there reacts with sulfide from hydrothermal-vent fluid to form orpiment, a mineral made of arsenic and sulfur. The “crystal armor” in the headline is a metaphor: the crystals are inside the worm, not a shell coating its outside.
What is the deep-sea “super worm”?
Paralvinella hessleri is a polychaete worm in the alvinellid family. It has been reported from the hottest parts of western Pacific hydrothermal vents, where hot, chemically rich fluids emerge from the seafloor. The worm’s ability to handle arsenic and sulfur in this setting is the focus of a study by Wang and colleagues, published in PLOS Biology on August 26, 2025.
The paper, “A deep-sea hydrothermal vent worm detoxifies arsenic and sulfur by intracellular biomineralization of orpiment (As₂S₃),” combines microscopy, elemental analysis, genomics and proteomics. Its findings support a proposed detoxification process; they do not mean that researchers watched every step of the chemical reaction happen in a living worm.
How does the worm turn arsenic into crystals?
The study found mineral granules within a single layer of epithelial cells. The authors propose that arsenic accumulates in these cells and that sulfide diffusing inward from vent fluid reacts with it, likely producing orpiment (As₂S₃). In this form, the study suggests, both arsenic and sulfide are detoxified.

- Mineral granules form inside cells: Microscopy and elemental analysis located the granules in epithelial cells rather than on the animal’s surface.
- A reaction is proposed: The authors interpret their findings as evidence that sulfide entering from vent fluid reacts with the accumulated arsenic to form orpiment. The reaction sequence is a scientific interpretation of the evidence, not a real-time observation.
How much arsenic did the study find?
Wang and colleagues reported 10,189 ± 2,231.1 micrograms of total arsenic per gram of fresh worm tissue (n=3). They estimated this to be nearly 1% of wet weight. In the reported speciation analysis, arsenite (As(III)) accounted for 92.21% of total arsenic. These are measurements from the study’s samples, not estimates for every worm or for the species as a whole.
Does it really wear crystal armor?
No. “Armor” makes a memorable image, but it can give the wrong impression: the reported mineral is not an external coat or hard shell. The granules are intracellular, inside epithelial cells. The finding is striking because the worm appears to manage toxic elements through mineral formation within its tissues, not because it wears a visible crystal covering.

What makes orpiment notable?
Orpiment is an arsenic sulfide mineral. The Chinese Academy of Sciences report on the study quotes coauthor Dr. Hao Wang noting that the same toxic, golden mineral produced by the worm was once prized by medieval and Renaissance painters. That historical use does not make orpiment safe; its arsenic content is toxic.

The microscopy, elemental analysis, genomics and proteomics provide several kinds of evidence about the worm’s arsenic handling and the granules. The authors’ proposed explanation is that arsenic and inward-diffusing sulfide are detoxified through intracellular orpiment biomineralization. The study does not establish that this process works identically in all individuals or other vent species, and its three-sample arsenic measurement should not be read as a population-wide average.
