What signs can suggest dehydration in a cat?
Possible clues include dry or tacky gums, skin that does not promptly return after a gentle lift near the shoulder blades, reduced energy or appetite, and changes in drinking or urination. Vomiting and diarrhea can both cause fluid loss. Look at the whole cat rather than relying on one sign.

A cat’s age, body condition, nausea, and other circumstances can affect how these signs appear. Cats can also hide illness, so a cat who seems unusually unwell deserves attention even if a home check seems normal. Why the skin-tent check is not a diagnosis
A gentle lift of skin near the shoulder blades may leave a tent if the skin does not promptly settle back. This can be a warning sign, but it is not a dependable stand-alone test. The Merck Veterinary Manual notes that physical estimates of dehydration are subjective and can mislead, including in geriatric or very young, emaciated, or nauseated animals. Do not try to assign your cat a dehydration percentage at home.

What can cause dehydration?
Dehydration can follow fluid loss, inadequate intake, or both. Repeated vomiting or diarrhea can remove fluid, while illness may also reduce a cat’s interest in food and water. The condition causing those problems matters: gastrointestinal disease, kidney disease, diabetes, pancreatitis, infection, obstruction, toxin exposure, and other illnesses may be involved. These possibilities overlap, so symptoms alone do not identify the cause.

When is dehydration an emergency?
Contact a veterinarian promptly if dehydration is possible, or if your cat has repeated vomiting or diarrhea, weakness, reduced appetite, or a notable change in thirst or urine output. Do not wait for a skin-tent check to confirm your concern.

How does a veterinarian diagnose dehydration?
The veterinarian considers your cat’s history, examination, hydration and circulation findings, and the suspected cause. A physical estimate alone can be misleading, so the full clinical picture matters. Depending on the symptoms, testing may include blood work, urinalysis, fecal testing, or imaging.
For persistent vomiting, Cornell describes starting with history and physical examination, then using blood and fecal tests, with radiographs or ultrasound when indicated. Testing helps investigate the illness behind the fluid loss or reduced intake, not just the hydration concern.

How is dehydration treated?
Treatment addresses the fluid deficit, the cat’s normal maintenance needs, and any ongoing losses while also treating the underlying problem. A veterinarian chooses the fluid type, amount, route, and monitoring plan according to the individual cat. Monitoring helps detect an inadequate response, electrolyte problems, or fluid overload.
In selected less severe cases, a veterinarian may recommend subcutaneous fluids, given in a clinic or at home under specific instructions. Severe illness may require hospitalization and intravenous fluids. Cornell describes these options in its discussion of pancreatitis; they are examples of veterinarian-directed care, not permission to start fluids independently. Never give a home fluid dose or administer IV or subcutaneous fluids without your veterinarian’s specific directions. How can you encourage a healthy cat to drink?
For a cat that otherwise seems well, these routine steps may encourage intake. They do not treat clinically significant dehydration or its cause.
- Keep fresh water available in several quiet locations away from the litter box.
- Wash bowls daily and try a different bowl material if your cat avoids the current one.
- Offer canned food, or gradually add water to food if your cat accepts it.
- Consider a filtered fountain if your cat prefers running water; follow its cleaning and filter-maintenance instructions.
VCA gives a general baseline for healthy cats of four ounces of water per five pounds of body weight per day. This is not a universal prescription: needs vary with diet, health, temperature, weight, and activity, and a veterinarian is the best source for an individual cat’s needs.
