The cited sources do not establish a safe or effective amount to give by mouth. The directions available are for one specific pesticide-labeled powder applied to the coat; they are not a general dose for DE products. Check the exact product label and ask your veterinarian before using any flea treatment.
Can you give a cat diatomaceous earth by mouth?
No oral dose is established in the sources cited here. The label for Lumino Diatomaceous Earth for Pets describes applying its powder to an animal’s coat, not feeding it. Do not convert the label’s topical direction to use a “small amount” into a quantity to put in food. Product formulation, route of exposure, dose, and species all affect pesticide risk, as explained in the Merck Veterinary Manual’s overview of ectoparasiticides.
What does the topical product label say?
An EPA-filed label for Lumino Diatomaceous Earth for Pets (EPA Registration No. 87949-2), dated 2016, gives directions for that particular product. It says to apply the powder full strength by rubbing it into the coat. The label describes putting a small amount in your palm and working it through the fur, starting at the head while avoiding the eyes and nose; it also lists the areas behind the ears, neck, back, tail area, haunches, legs, and belly. These are product-specific instructions, not a universal veterinary dosage or a recommendation for every DE powder.
The label suggests repeating application every seven to ten days for a month. It says not to use the product on puppies or kittens under 12 weeks and advises consulting a veterinarian before use on debilitated, aged, medicated, pregnant, or nursing animals. Because the label is dated 2016, check the current label for the exact product before use; do not assume its directions or registration status are current.

What side effects and exposure risks should you know about?
The Lumino label warns that the product causes moderate eye irritation and advises avoiding eye contact and breathing dust. It calls for adequate ventilation and a suitable dust mask during prolonged exposure. These precautions matter when handling a fine powder, particularly when applying it near a cat’s face.
The label also says sensitivity may occur after pesticide use. If signs of sensitivity appear, it directs the user to bathe the pet with mild soap and rinse with plenty of water; if signs continue, consult a veterinarian immediately. This is label guidance, not a measured rate of adverse reactions in cats. The cited sources do not establish DE-specific feline side-effect rates or outcomes after ingestion.

EPA guidance says to use flea and tick products only on the animal species and size or weight specified on the label, observe age and health restrictions, and monitor for adverse effects. If your cat reacts to a pesticide product, contact a veterinarian or the National Pesticide Information Center. See the EPA’s pet flea and tick guidance.

No single coat treatment should be treated as a complete flea-control plan. The Merck Veterinary Manual describes three goals: eliminate fleas on the pet, address an existing infestation in the environment, and prevent reinfestation. An established infestation can take two to three months to come under control because flea life stages remain in the environment.

VCA Animal Hospitals notes that powders and shampoos may kill fleas when applied but have little lasting effect. Its guidance recommends reading labels, choosing products labeled for cats, and consulting a veterinarian; household treatment may also be needed. See VCA’s cat flea-control guidance.
