Did AI Help Humans Have a 20-Minute “Conversation” With a Humpback Whale?

Researchers really did exchange calls with a humpback whale for about 20 minutes—but AI did not translate the whale. Here is what the Twain experiment showed, why she may have responded, and what remains unknown.

No—AI did not translate a humpback whale in this experiment. The underlying event was real: in August 2021, researchers in Southeast Alaska played a recorded humpback social call through an underwater speaker, and a female whale later identified as Twain approached, circled the vessel, and responded for approximately 20 minutes.

The exchange involved repeated call-and-response behavior and timing changes that resembled turn-taking. It did not establish that humans understood Twain’s message, that she understood human intent, or that an AI system conducted the interaction. The most accurate description is an extended, timing-sensitive acoustic exchange with a wild humpback whale.

What happened in the Alaska experiment?

The field experiment took place in August 2021 in Frederick Sound, Southeast Alaska, aboard the research vessel Glacier Seal. Researchers used hydrophones—underwater microphones—to listen for whale sounds and an underwater speaker to broadcast a recorded humpback-whale social call.

The call, known as a “whup” or “throp,” had been recorded from a nearby group of humpback whales the previous day. Researchers believe this type of call may function as a contact signal, but its precise meaning has not been established.

A female humpback later identified as Twain approached the vessel, circled it, and began responding to the playback. The team broadcast 38 calls and recorded 36 apparent responses. When researchers changed the intervals between their calls, Twain’s response timing changed in relation to those intervals as well. The exchange continued for approximately 20 minutes.

That period ended because the researchers’ permit allowed playback only for a limited time—not because Twain immediately left. The result was an unusually sustained, interactive acoustic encounter. But it was not a translation of whale language.

Was this really a conversation?

Only if “conversation” is used in a narrow, behavioral sense—and the quotation marks matter.

The researchers observed several features that made the encounter more interactive than a one-time reaction to a noise:

  • Twain approached and remained near the research vessel.
  • She circled the boat while the playback continued.
  • She responded repeatedly rather than producing one isolated call.
  • Her response timing tracked changes in the timing of the researchers’ calls.

Those observations resemble turn-taking: one participant produces a signal, the other responds, and the timing of the exchange changes dynamically. That is why researchers described the event as an extended acoustic exchange and discussed it as a possible conversation-like interaction.

What the experiment did not establish is equally important. There was no shared dictionary, no demonstrated exchange of propositions, and no evidence that Twain understood a human communicative intention. Researchers could not determine whether she was asking a question, greeting the boat, identifying herself, reacting to a familiar sound, or doing something for which humans have no useful verbal equivalent.

Claim What the evidence supports
“Humans exchanged calls with a whale.” Yes. Researchers broadcast recorded calls and recorded repeated whale responses.
“The whale took turns responding.” There was turn-taking-like timing and an extended exchange.
“Scientists translated the whale.” No. The meaning of the calls remains unknown.
“The whale said hello or introduced herself as Twain.” No. Twain was identified by researchers from photographs, not by a decoded vocal message.
“AI conducted the conversation.” Not according to the documented description of this experiment.

The most important correction: AI did not translate Twain

The headline’s “AI breakthrough” wording blurs together two related but separate developments.

In the Twain encounter itself, the operational tools were recorded audio, an underwater speaker, hydrophones, behavioral observation, and analysis of the timing between calls. The available account does not describe an artificial-intelligence system generating the whale calls, translating Twain in real time, or telling the researchers what she meant.

Artificial intelligence and information theory are relevant to the wider research program. Scientists can use computational methods to look for repeated structures, statistical regularities, and potentially meaningful patterns in large collections of animal sounds. The Whale-SETI program also uses animal communication as a way to explore “intelligence filters”—methods that might help identify structured signals from an unfamiliar intelligent source, including a possible signal from space.

That is a research strategy, not evidence that a machine understood this particular whale. The distinction is the same as the difference between detecting regularities in a foreign language and translating a sentence. Pattern detection can show that a signal is structured without revealing what the signal means.

Why might Twain have responded so strongly?

One especially important detail is that the recording played back to Twain came from a group that included her. Researchers identified Twain later through photographs and believed she had been part of the group from which the call was recorded. The call may even have been produced by Twain herself, although that was not proven.

A familiar call could help explain the whale’s approach and repeated responses. Twain may have been responding to a recognizable social signal rather than trying to communicate with humans as humans. Familiarity does not make the response uninteresting; it makes the experiment harder to interpret.

Other explanations are also possible. The sound might have attracted her attention, triggered a social response, or caused her to investigate an unexpected source. The matching of call intervals suggests that she was sensitive to the timing of the playback, but timing sensitivity alone does not reveal her motivation or the semantic content of the calls.

What equipment did researchers use?

A hydrophone is an underwater microphone designed to detect sound below the surface. Researchers use hydrophones to record whale calls and connect those sounds with individuals, behavior, location, and environmental conditions. The underwater speaker served the opposite purpose: it converted the recorded signal back into sound in the marine environment.

For a hobbyist interested in hearing underwater soundscapes, an underwater hydrophone is the closest practical consumer tool to the recording side of this work. It can help capture aquatic sounds for listening or later analysis, but it will not reproduce the Alaska experiment. Professional research systems involve specialized recording, deployment, calibration, boat operations, permits, and careful protocols around wild animals.

Anyone using recording equipment around marine life should also avoid playing whale calls or other wildlife sounds without appropriate authorization and expert guidance. Recording an animal is not the same as deliberately attracting or disrupting it.

The Alaska Whale Foundation’s broader Southeast Alaska work illustrates why equipment must be interpreted in context. Its research combines communication studies with social-structure and foraging research, surveys, and animal-borne tags carrying cameras, hydrophones, and environmental sensors. The goal is to connect sounds to animals and behavior rather than treat an isolated recording as a self-explanatory message.

Was Twain enjoying the exchange?

We cannot tell from the whale’s proximity or continued responding. Staying near the vessel may indicate curiosity or engagement, but it could also reflect confusion, frustration, attraction to a familiar call, or another response that humans cannot identify from the available observations.

Researchers reported possible signs of agitation during part of the experiment, including wheezy or forced blows and an increased breathing frequency. Those observations are a reason to avoid describing the event as a pleasant chat or claiming that Twain “wanted to talk.” A wild animal remaining close to a research boat is not proof that the interaction was welcome.

This welfare issue is central to future playback research. A stronger study would need carefully controlled exposure limits, behavioral and physiological monitoring, comparisons between familiar and unfamiliar calls, and clear stopping rules when an animal shows signs of distress. The scientific value of an interaction does not override the animal’s welfare.

What does the experiment actually tell us about whale communication?

It demonstrates that interactive playback can reveal behaviors that passive listening cannot.

When researchers only record whale sounds, they can measure when animals vocalize, how calls vary, and which individuals are nearby. An interactive experiment can ask additional questions: Does an animal approach the source? Does it answer? Does its response change when the timing changes? Does it respond differently to a familiar call and an unfamiliar one?

These questions can help scientists investigate attention, social recognition, turn-taking, and signal structure. They may eventually help distinguish a meaningful exchange from a simple reflex or attraction to sound. But one unusual encounter cannot establish a humpback grammar or a dictionary of whale words.

NOAA’s acoustic-monitoring work provides broader context. Bottom-moored acoustic recorders are used to monitor whale presence and seasonal patterns, while automated algorithms help quantify whale song in large soundscape recordings. Computational analysis is therefore already valuable in whale research. Its usefulness does not mean that the algorithms have decoded the animals’ semantic messages.

How does Whale-SETI fit into the story?

Whale-SETI research is not based on the claim that whales are sending messages from space. Its connection to the search for extraterrestrial intelligence is methodological: whales provide an opportunity to test how humans might recognize structured communication from an intelligent system whose signals we do not understand.

Researchers can study features such as signal complexity, statistical regularity, information structure, and turn-taking in a terrestrial species before applying similar analytical ideas to possible extraterrestrial signals. If scientists cannot reliably separate communication from noise in an animal whose behavior they can observe directly, they would have an even harder time interpreting an unknown signal from beyond Earth.

The Twain encounter was useful in that context because it showed how a playback experiment could produce a measurable, timing-sensitive response. It was a beginning for better experiments, not a completed system for communicating with nonhuman intelligence.

What about Google’s DolphinGemma?

Google’s DolphinGemma, announced in April 2025, is a separate project and should not be used as evidence that AI enabled the Twain interaction. Google described DolphinGemma as an audio model of approximately 400 million parameters trained on a long-running database of sounds from Atlantic spotted dolphins.

The model is intended to identify patterns, predict likely subsequent sounds, and support future controlled interactive work with dolphins. That makes it an important example of AI-assisted cetacean research, but dolphins and humpback whales are different animals, and a later model cannot retroactively explain what happened in the 2021 Alaska experiment.

In short:

  • The Twain experiment involved playback and acoustic recording.
  • Broader Whale-SETI work considers computational and information-theoretic analysis.
  • DolphinGemma is a later, separate AI effort focused on dolphin vocalizations.
  • None of these facts amounts to a proven whale-language translator.

What evidence would be needed before scientists could claim a real whale conversation?

A single response to a familiar call is a valuable observation, but it leaves many competing explanations open. A stronger body of evidence would likely require:

  1. Repeated trials: The response should occur across multiple encounters and, ideally, with multiple whales.
  2. Familiar-versus-unfamiliar controls: Researchers would need to compare calls from group members, calls from unrelated whales, and carefully controlled non-social sounds.
  3. Randomized timing: Changes in timing should be planned in advance and analyzed against appropriate controls, rather than interpreted only after an interesting response occurs.
  4. Individual identification: Researchers would need reliable evidence linking calls to specific whales.
  5. Behavioral and physiological monitoring: Proximity and vocal responses should be interpreted alongside breathing, movement, body condition, and other welfare indicators.
  6. Predictive results: A communication hypothesis should make testable predictions about what a whale will do next—not merely explain an intriguing recording after the fact.

Even then, establishing that whales exchange meaningful information would be different from translating every call into human language. Communication can be real without being neatly convertible into English sentences.

So, did humans have a 20-minute conversation with a humpback whale?

Researchers did conduct an approximately 20-minute, two-way acoustic playback exchange with a humpback whale named Twain. She approached the vessel, circled it, responded repeatedly, and changed her response timing as the researchers changed theirs.

Calling that a “conversation” is reasonable only as a cautious description of the interaction’s structure. Calling it an AI-enabled translation breakthrough is not supported by the evidence. The experiment showed a promising way to investigate nonhuman communication; it did not reveal what Twain meant, prove that she understood the researchers, or demonstrate that an AI system spoke with her.

Readers who want to follow the science can explore Alaska Whale Foundation research on humpback communication and field methods, as well as UC Davis whale communication research discussing the encounter and its limitations. Those sources are more useful than viral summaries that turn an experimental observation into a fictional transcript.

Frequently Asked Questions

Did AI translate what the humpback whale was saying?

No. The documented Twain experiment used a recorded humpback social call, an underwater speaker, hydrophones, behavioral observation, and timing analysis. AI and information theory are part of the broader Whale-SETI research agenda, but no real-time AI translator or generative system is reported as participating in this encounter.

What did the whale actually say?

Researchers recorded 36 apparent responses after broadcasting 38 calls, and Twain’s response timing changed when the researchers changed the intervals between their calls. That supports a turn-taking-like acoustic interaction, but it does not reveal the meaning of any individual call.

Why did Twain respond to the playback?

The recording came from a nearby group that researchers believed included Twain and may even have contained a call produced by her. Familiarity is one possible explanation for her response, but it does not prove that she recognized the call or understood the researchers’ intention.

Was the whale enjoying the conversation?

Not necessarily. Researchers observed possible signs of agitation, including wheezy or forced blows and increased breathing frequency. Remaining near the vessel and continuing to respond cannot by themselves distinguish curiosity from stress, confusion, or another reaction.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: The whale encounter was real, but the headline overstates it. Researchers used a familiar recorded social call, an underwater speaker, and hydrophones to elicit an extended, timing-sensitive response from Twain. The evidence supports a remarkable acoustic interaction—not AI translation, a decoded whale message, or proof that the whale was having a human-like conversation.
