Eight beavers in the Czech Republic’s Brdy region built dams where a public dam project had stalled during planning and permitting. Their work was reported to have spared a planned project costing about 30 million Czech korunas, or roughly $1.2 million—but the “overnight” part is misleading: the reporting does not establish that the dams were built in one night.
What happened in the Brdy region?
National Geographic reported in February 2025 that officials found beaver-built dams in an area of the Brdy region where a human dam project had been under development for seven years. The project, intended to address water issues, had run into a permitting impasse. Eight beavers had built dams there before the planned intervention moved ahead.
Jaroslav Obermajer, head of the Central Bohemian office of the Czech Nature and Landscape Protection Agency, summed up the officials’ reaction to the animals’ work: “Beavers always know best,” as quoted by National Geographic.
Where does the $1.2 million figure come from?
EarthSky reported in March 2025 that the project would have cost 30 million Czech korunas, citing Bohumil Fišer, head of the Brdy Protected Landscape Area. EarthSky gave that amount as about $1.2 million USD. That is a reported estimate, not an audited finding that the government realized a specific saving; the coverage does not explain the currency conversion date or the accounting behind the figure.

EarthSky reproduced a statement attributed to Fišer: “The Military Forest Administration and the Vltava River Basin Authority were negotiating the project and addressing land ownership issues. The beavers got ahead of them, saving us 30 million Czech korunas. They built the dams without any project documentation and at no cost. We can already see a small pond and the surrounding wetland forming.” The statement describes the reported cost and an early local observation, rather than a published cost-benefit analysis.
Did the beavers build the dams in one night?
That is not what the available reporting proves. “Overnight” reflects the idea that people discovered the finished work after it had gone unnoticed; it should not be read as a verified construction timeline. Beaver manager Gerhard Schwab told National Geographic that a true dam can take weeks to build. He joked, “I could as well believe that the pyramids were built in one week.”

Were the beaver dams equivalent to the planned project?
The reporting establishes that beavers built dams where a proposed public project had stalled, but it does not show that the natural structures were engineered replacements for the planned works. The sources provide no measured comparison of cost, flood performance, durability, maintenance, or habitat outcomes. It is therefore more accurate to say the beavers’ work arrived ahead of the stalled project than to claim the dams delivered the same services as a designed public dam.

Beavers use rocks, mud, and wood to dam streams. The resulting ponds can provide food and protection for beavers and create wetland habitat used by other species. Beaver dams are also associated with wider ecological benefits, including flood control, but the reporting does not provide site-specific measurements showing those outcomes at the Brdy location.
