Did Polar Bears Really Roam Scotland? What the Fossil Evidence Shows

Three Ice Age bear samples from northwest Scotland had isotope signals suggesting diets dominated by seafood. Researchers are investigating whether they were polar bears, unusual brown bears, or bears with mixed ancestry.

Possibly—but polar bears have not been confirmed in Scotland. Three bear samples from the Inchnadamph Bone Caves in northwest Scotland, dated to about 30,000–50,000 years ago, show isotope signals interpreted as evidence of diets made up almost entirely of marine fish or other seafood. That unusual diet has led researchers to test whether the animals were polar bears, but diet alone cannot identify a species.

What did the Scottish bear fossils actually show?

The samples came from the Inchnadamph Bone Caves in Sutherland, in the Assynt region of northwest Scotland. A 2024 report supplied by the University of Aberdeen described three bear samples dated to about 30,000–50,000 years old. Their stable-isotope values were interpreted as indicating diets made up almost entirely of marine fish or other seafood. The University of Aberdeen-supplied report on Phys.org calls this markedly different from what researchers would expect of brown bears.

Stable isotopes can provide evidence about an animal’s diet. They do not, by themselves, establish whether an animal was a brown bear, a polar bear, or a bear with mixed ancestry. The striking result is therefore evidence of unusual feeding—not a confirmed identification of polar bears.

Were the Ice Age bears polar bears or brown bears?

The species question remains open. A 2024 review, “The bears of Scotland,” describes a long but non-continuous record of bears at the Assynt caves, including remains identified as brown bears. It also documents wide dietary variation among Scottish bears, from strongly marine-based diets to nearly vegetarian ones. That broader record makes unusual feeding by brown bears a possibility, although the seafood-heavy diets of the three samples stand out. The review in Annales Zoologici Fennici also cautions that the caves’ limestone may have helped preserve remains unusually well, so the concentration of finds may partly reflect preservation conditions.

Possible identity What it could explain What remains unresolved
Polar bears A diet dominated by marine food would fit a marine-feeding bear; a proposed Ice Age sea-ice expansion offers a possible route south. The isotope results do not identify the species. DNA and physical examination are needed to test this interpretation.
Brown bears with unusual maritime diets The Scottish bear record includes substantial dietary variation, including strongly marine-based diets. The three samples’ near-exclusive seafood signal is unusual and needs explanation.
A distinct brown-bear population or subspecies, or hybrid ancestry These are other possibilities raised by researchers for bears with unusual traits or ancestry. Further genetic work is needed to assess these possibilities.

Kate Britton, a University of Aberdeen professor, put the dilemma this way: “The diet is so unusual that we now need to either reevaluate what we know about brown bear feeding ecology or question whether these fossils are brown bears at all.” The University of Aberdeen-supplied report said researchers were conducting DNA analysis with Swedish collaborators and planned additional physical study of the bones. Those were reported research plans, not a settled identification.

How might polar bears have reached Scotland?

One proposed explanation is that, during a cold period, seasonal North Atlantic sea ice extended farther south and could have allowed polar bears to range beyond their usual northern habitat. Andrew Kitchener, National Museums Scotland’s Principal Curator of Vertebrates, said: “When experiencing this habitat expansion, the polar bears may well have encountered the brown bears that inhabited Scotland at this time.” This describes a possible route and encounter, not evidence that either happened at these caves.

The Assynt caves have a substantial bear record: the 2024 review characterizes bear presence there as extending over at least about 50,000 years, but not continuously through the Last Glacial Maximum. The regional archaeological record also includes radiocarbon-dated late-glacial brown bear remains from the Creag nan Uamh cave system. The Scottish Archaeological Research Framework notes that faunal assignments can require direct dating because remains may be contaminated or misattributed. Is the older Reindeer Cave skull proof of Scottish polar bears?

No. A skull from Reindeer Cave was previously proposed as a possible polar bear, partly because of some morphological features and a reported age of 23,230–22,340 calibrated years BP at 95.4% probability. But the 2024 review notes that its carbon-isotope value, −21.0‰, is incongruous with a polar-bear identification. The 2024 news account also says modern archaeological techniques have called the skull’s dating into question. This debated skull is separate from the three recently discussed isotope samples, and it does not confirm their identity.

What would settle the question?

DNA analysis could help distinguish among polar bears, brown bears, and possible hybrid ancestry. Examination of bone morphology could provide another line of evidence. Until such results are reported and establish an identification, the careful conclusion is that the samples came from bears with exceptionally marine-heavy diets—not confirmed polar bears.
