Kennedy Jr. cut off a dead whale’s head with a chainsaw comes from a 2012 magazine profile in which his daughter, Kathleen “Kick” Kennedy, recounted the episode. Authorities confirmed an investigation in 2024, and NOAA later said the allegation was unfounded and that it had closed the investigation. The sources reviewed do not independently establish that the alleged incident happened or explain the evidence behind NOAA’s conclusion.
What did Kick Kennedy say happened?
In a Town & Country profile published December 25, 2012, Kathleen “Kick” Kennedy recalled that when she was six, her father went to Squaw Island in Hyannis Port, Massachusetts, after a dead whale washed ashore.
She said he cut off the whale’s head with a chainsaw, strapped it to the roof of the family minivan with bungee cords, and drove it to Mount Kisco, New York. The profile also recounts her description of whale fluids entering the vehicle and family members wearing plastic bags over their heads during the trip.
This is a named family member’s published recollection, not independent corroboration. The profile does not give an exact date for the alleged incident or identify the whale’s species. Later coverage has commonly placed it around 1994, but that is not a precise date established by the original account.

Was there a federal investigation?
Yes. In September 2024, the National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS) confirmed to the Associated Press that authorities were investigating. Kennedy said he had received notice concerning the collection of a whale specimen. The AP report did not describe a clear admission that he cut off and transported the whale’s head.
An investigation is not proof that an allegation is true. The reported public record establishes that authorities opened an inquiry; it does not independently establish the alleged act.
What did NOAA conclude?
On October 25, 2024, NOAA’s Office of Law Enforcement said it had determined the allegation was “unfounded” and had closed the investigation. WRAL, carrying CNN’s report, quoted a NOAA spokesperson using that language. The spokesperson provided no further information.

NOAA provides guidance on scientific research permits for marine mammal and protected-species parts. That is general permit context, not a determination about Kennedy or this alleged incident.
The Center for Biological Diversity Action Fund called for an inquiry in 2024. Its legal accusations and request for investigation should be attributed to the group; they are not findings by NOAA or a court. Global News reported on the group’s call for an inquiry.
