What are some fun facts about the ASPCA? Founded in New York City on April 10, 1866, the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals paired public advocacy with legal enforcement. The ASPCA describes itself as North America’s first animal-welfare organization, and its own anniversary accounts trace a path from protecting working horses to a much wider range of animal-welfare services.

When was the ASPCA founded, and who started it?

The ASPCA says Henry Bergh founded the organization in New York City on April 10, 1866. Bergh secured a charter from the New York State Legislature, giving the new organization a formal basis for its work. The ASPCA’s account presents this as the beginning of an organization that would combine public advocacy with action against cruelty. ASPCA history

Bergh’s mission, as the ASPCA quotes it, was “to provide effective means for the prevention of cruelty to animals throughout the United States.” That nationwide ambition began with an organization founded in New York. The ASPCA is not a government agency; its historical account describes a state-chartered organization working under anti-cruelty law.

What did the ASPCA do in its first year?

According to the ASPCA’s 2026 anniversary account, 11 agents carried out 119 prosecutions in the organization’s first year, resulting in 66 convictions. The figures show how quickly the ASPCA’s work moved from founding and advocacy into investigations and enforcement. These are historical totals reported by the organization, rather than independently audited figures. ASPCA’s 2026 anniversary account

How did an early animal-cruelty law define protection?

The ASPCA says a New York anti-cruelty law passed nine days after the organization was founded. Its described reach included “any living creature,” and the law addressed actions such as overworking, overloading, tormenting, depriving an animal of necessary food, cruelly beating or mutilating it, or needlessly killing it. The ASPCA reproduces the historical wording in its account; the broad phrasing is notable in a law whose era’s most visible animal-welfare concerns included working horses. What did the ASPCA report during Henry Bergh’s tenure?

The ASPCA reports that during Bergh’s tenure, the organization prosecuted nearly 14,000 cases, removed more than 35,000 animals from grueling labor, and humanely ended the suffering of 25,000 horses it deemed “disabled past recovery.” These figures describe work over Bergh’s tenure, not just the first year; “nearly” and “more than” are the organization’s own qualifications. They also illustrate the prominence of horse welfare in the ASPCA’s early work. ASPCA’s 2026 anniversary account

How has the ASPCA’s work changed over 160 years?

The founding-era accounts emphasize advocacy, investigations, agents, prosecutions, and intervention for animals—especially working horses. The ASPCA’s present-day overview describes a broader set of activities, including veterinary care, disaster response, animal rehabilitation and adoption, research, professional training, and advocacy. This is a comparison of the eras’ documented emphases, not evidence that every current service has operated continuously since 1866. ASPCA’s current overview

A modern example: moving pets to adoption-ready communities

One later example of direct intervention is the ASPCA’s animal-relocation program. Its history timeline says that by 2024 the program had moved nearly 275,000 cats and dogs to adoption-ready communities. That is a cumulative figure through 2024, not an annual total. ASPCA history timeline
