The researchers reconstructed a fleshy crest along the neck and trunk, spikes over the hips and tail, and hoof-like coverings on the hind toes. Despite the nickname “mummies,” the fossils do not contain preserved flesh: their outer forms were recorded in a very thin clay template.
What did these Edmontosaurus look like?
The 2025 study describes two end-Cretaceous duck-billed dinosaurs, Edmontosaurus annectens, whose remains preserve more than the outline of their skeletons. Imaging helped researchers interpret the external forms surrounding the bones and reconstruct features that are rarely visible in ordinary dinosaur fossils.
In that reconstruction, a fleshy crest ran over the neck and trunk. A row of interdigitating spikes extended across the hips and tail, and the hind toes were capped by hoof-like coverings. These are features inferred from the fossils by the study’s authors, not surviving skin or tissue.
University of Chicago paleontologist Paul Sereno, the study’s senior author, called the result “the first time we’ve had a complete, fleshed-out view of a large dinosaur that we can really feel confident about.” The confidence refers to the researchers’ interpretation of the preserved external forms; it does not mean that every detail of the living animals is known.

- Edmontosaurus belongs to the hadrosaur family, a giant herbivorous dinosaur that lived during the late Cretaceous period。
- Edmontosaurus has a flat, broad front, a duck-like mouth and nose, and a long, narrow tail.
- This model of Edmontosaurus is a 1:35 scientific restoration model that combines artistic creation and design. Bringing prehistoric civilization to our eyes.
- This product is a scientific reductive model that is perfect for educational purposes, endangered species awareness, environmental awareness, as well as gaining a deeper knowledge of actual animals.
- Not only is it the perfect gift for dinosaur lovers, but it also makes a great birthday present and is suitable for family surprises and educational institutions.
What does “dinosaur mummy” mean here?
“Mummy” is an informal description of exceptional preservation, not a claim that the animals were preserved like Egyptian mummies or that original flesh remains. The study identifies the external integumental forms as a clay template—a thin record of the carcass’s surface—while the bones themselves were permineralized.
The authors interpret the template as having formed on the surface of a buried carcass during decay. It was less than one millimeter thick, according to the study. The University of Chicago’s 2025 account describes the clay mask as no more than 1/100th of an inch thick; both figures refer to the same exceptionally thin layer.

What is directly preserved, and what is reconstructed?
- Preserved: clay impressions that record external forms, alongside permineralized bones.
- Reconstructed: the crest, spike row, and hind-foot hooves as features of the dinosaurs’ appearance in life, based on interpretation of those external forms.
- Not claimed: survival of original flesh, or direct evidence in this study for behavior, gait, or ecology.
That distinction matters: the clay template gives researchers evidence unavailable from a skeleton alone, but the living-animal profile remains a scientific reconstruction of what the preserved shapes represent.

Most dinosaur fossils chiefly preserve hard parts, especially bones. These Wyoming specimens also retain a surface record of the animals’ external contours, letting researchers investigate body features that bone alone would not reveal. The clay is not a cast of every biological detail; its value is that it preserves an unusually extensive outline of the carcasses.

- Get a complete Edmontosaurus display-and-learning set with Zabad: a 12.8-inch hand-painted model, A3 Sci-Art poster, 64-page illustrated manual, and QR codes linking to online educational videos (internet required).
- Zabad reconstructs Edmontosaurus as a large Late Cretaceous plant-eating hadrosaur that reached approximately 8-12 meters in length and commonly moved on all fours.
- The head features a broad, flattened duckbill, numerous grinding teeth, and a distinctive fleshy crest rather than a solid bony head ornament.
- Detailed sculpting presents the robust body, contrasting forelimbs and hind limbs, small body scales, larger shield-like neck scales, and a forward-stepping pose.
- Made from solid PVC and finished by hand, Zabad is designed for ages 15+ and adult collectors building a hadrosaur, herbivore, or paleoart display.
The result is a richer picture of Edmontosaurus than a skeleton can provide, while still leaving a clear boundary between fossil evidence and the researchers’ interpretation of appearance.
