Yes, some cats eat less in summer, but a seasonal dip is not a safe explanation for a sudden or persistent loss of appetite. In a four-year study of 38 adult colony cats in southern France, average intake was about 15% lower in summer than in winter; that finding does not predict every pet cat’s needs or justify cutting portions by 15%. Track what your cat actually eats and contact a veterinarian promptly if the change is marked, continues, or comes with other signs of illness.
What a study found about cats eating less in summer
A prospective study followed daily food intake in 38 adult colony cats in southern France from 2006 through 2009. Intake varied by month: it was lowest in summer and highest in late autumn and winter. The study reported average summer intake approximately 15% below winter intake, but found no seasonal pattern in body weight. The study, published in PLOS ONE in 2014, describes a group-level observation, not a portion prescription for an individual cat.

The cats’ colony setting and feeding conditions differ from many household situations. The study observed associations with temperature and daylight but could not separate their effects cleanly or establish one cause for any individual cat’s appetite. Use the result as context, not as a reason to assume an appetite change is harmless.

Should you change your cat’s food portions in summer?
Do not reduce every cat’s food by 15%. The study did not find seasonal weight variation, and it does not establish that an individual pet should eat less. Food requirements vary with the cat and its circumstances; Cornell’s feeding guidance recommends considering an individual cat’s needs rather than applying a universal seasonal amount.

Measure or otherwise monitor the food offered and left uneaten, and keep an eye on weight and body condition. If intake changes substantially, ask your veterinarian whether the amount or feeding plan needs adjustment rather than making a large change based only on the weather.
How to tell a seasonal dip from a problem
A cat eating less may be uninterested in food, or may want to eat but have trouble chewing or swallowing. Those situations can point to different problems. VCA’s overview of anorexia in cats distinguishes reduced interest from difficulty eating, while Cornell’s guidance on feline anorexia notes that appetite loss can have many causes and warrants veterinary attention.

Note how much your cat eats and drinks, and whether weight, energy, or behavior changes or other symptoms appear. A familiar pattern in summer does not rule out illness. Cornell lecturer Carolyn McDaniel, VMD, says, “A cat that is not eating deserves to have a full veterinary workup—a thorough physical exam followed by any lab work and imaging that’s indicated by the exam.”

When to contact a veterinarian
- Contact a veterinarian promptly if your cat stops eating, has a marked or persistent appetite change, or seems unwell. Do not wait for a seasonal pattern to pass when other signs of illness are present.
- VCA advises immediate veterinary attention if a cat has not eaten properly for 24 hours. Treat that as an outer threshold, not a reason to wait if your cat is already unwell, very young, or otherwise at risk.
- Do not force-feed or start appetite stimulants, a medical diet, or other treatment without veterinary direction. These interventions depend on the cause and the cat’s condition.
Summer steps that support comfort and hydration
Keep water easy to reach
Keep fresh water available at all times. Cornell’s heat-safety guidance notes that a fountain may encourage some cats to drink more; it is an optional aid, not a treatment for poor appetite or a guarantee that a cat will drink enough.

Offer a cooler place to rest
Provide shade and a cool resting area. When extreme heat is forecast, keep your cat in a cooler indoor space, using air conditioning where feasible. Cornell lists a cooling mat as one possible way to offer a cool resting place, but a comfortable, shaded area is the priority.
Make food more appealing only when appropriate
Food preference and presentation can affect willingness to eat, but they do not explain every appetite change. Cornell notes that some cats may find moist food more palatable. VCA describes small, frequent meals and food warmed to approximately body temperature as possible palatability measures with veterinary guidance. Ask your veterinarian before changing diets or trying these approaches, especially if appetite loss is ongoing.

Recognize heatstroke and act urgently
Weakness or collapse, excessive panting, drooling, vomiting, and diarrhea can be signs of heatstroke. Cornell advises moving the cat to a cool area, gently wetting the fur with cool—not very cold—water, and contacting a veterinarian immediately. Do not treat these symptoms as ordinary summer tiredness or wait to see whether appetite returns.
