Some cats welcome a cool room, while others prefer a warmer spot; there is no single AC setting or temperature preference established for every cat. In hot weather, give your cat access to an air-conditioned area and fresh water, while letting them move somewhere else if they choose. Air conditioning can be especially important during extreme heat and for cats more vulnerable to heat-related problems.
Do cats like air conditioning?
Cats do not all respond to air conditioning the same way. The available veterinary guidance supports giving cats access to a cool space in extreme heat, but it does not establish that every cat likes AC or identify one ideal household thermostat setting. Watch where your cat chooses to rest and allow them to move between cooler and warmer areas.

Cornell University’s Feline Health Center advises keeping cats indoors in air-conditioned areas when extreme heat is forecast. The ASPCA recommends air-conditioned rooms as much as possible for flat-faced pets and those who are elderly, overweight, or have heart or lung disease. These are general precautions, not a guarantee that every cat in one of these groups will overheat.
What temperature should I set the AC for my cat?
There is no universal cat-specific AC temperature established by the cited veterinary sources, so avoid treating a particular thermostat number as a vet-approved target. A cat’s age, health, build, and behavior can affect what feels comfortable. If your cat has a health condition or you are unsure how to manage the temperature at home, ask your veterinarian for advice tailored to them.

Do not confuse room temperature with body temperature. VCA Animal Hospitals lists the normal body temperature range for dogs and cats as 100.0–102.5°F (37.7–39.2°C) in an article edited February 26, 2026. That is a clinical body-temperature range, not an indoor air temperature or recommended AC setting. VCA also cautions that appearance alone cannot determine whether a pet’s body temperature is too high or too low.
How to make a cool, comfortable space
Offer choices rather than forcing your cat to stay directly in front of an AC vent or fan. Make sure they can reach water and a resting place, and can leave the cool area if they want to.

- Reduce heat from sunlight. VCA recommends closing blinds or curtains during the day to help cool the home.
- Maintain airflow. A fan can help circulate air when AC is unavailable, but leave your cat free to move away from it.
These measures offer practical ways to make a home more comfortable; the sources do not provide comparative trials that rank them by effectiveness.

Yes, a cat may find a particular cool spot uncomfortable, which is why access to another area matters. Do not assume that colder AC is always better. Cornell warns that outdoor cats exposed to low temperatures along with wind and precipitation can be at risk of hypothermia and frostbite. It recommends keeping cats indoors when possible; if that is not possible, suitable shelter and bedding matter. The guidance does not give a precise indoor temperature threshold for AC-related cold stress.

How to recognize heatstroke and respond
Heatstroke is an emergency. Cornell and Cats Protection list signs that can include fast or excessive breathing or panting, drooling, weakness, confusion, vomiting, diarrhea, and collapse. If you suspect heatstroke, contact a veterinarian promptly rather than relying on home cooling alone.
- Move your cat out of the hot environment to a cooler area with airflow.
- Begin gentle cooling while contacting veterinary help. Cornell advises gently wetting the fur with cool—not very cold—water. Cats Protection recommends using a cloth with lukewarm water and warns against cooling too abruptly, which can cause additional stress.
- Get veterinary advice as soon as possible. Cooling at home is not a substitute for prompt veterinary assessment.
Which cats need extra attention in hot weather?
The ASPCA identifies flat-faced pets, elderly or overweight animals, and animals with heart or lung disease as more susceptible to heat problems. It recommends air-conditioned rooms as much as possible for these groups. This does not mean every cat with one of these characteristics will become ill; it does mean taking heat precautions seriously and asking your veterinarian about individual needs.
