1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsSome cats may tolerate white noise, and it may help make disruptive sounds less distinct, but there is no evidence that cats generally like it or that it reliably calms them. Treat it as an optional way to mask background noise, not as a treatment for anxiety. Keep it quiet, give your cat a familiar place to retreat, and switch it off if your cat seems unsettled.
What the evidence says about cats and white noise
There is no established household trial showing that white noise makes cats feel calmer, sleep better, or feel less afraid. PetMD describes a white noise machine as something that “may be useful” for masking sounds around frightening events; that is practical expert advice, not a controlled test of its effects on cats. PetMD’s feline-care guidance quotes Adi Hovav, senior feline behavior counselor at the ASPCA Adoption Center, on that possible use.

The distinction matters: masking can make a sudden outside sound less noticeable, but it does not show that the sound doing the masking is pleasant or soothing to the cat. A cat’s response to white noise is individual, so observe the animal rather than assuming the sound is helping.
Why background noise matters
Noise itself can affect cats. A 2022 study of common veterinary-clinic sounds—including people talking, kennel doors, and dogs barking—reported physiological stress responses associated with high background-noise levels. The study examined clinic noise; it did not test white noise as a remedy. Read the 2022 study on veterinary background noise.

The 2022 ISFM/AAFP Cat Friendly Veterinary Environment Guidelines recommend attending to the sound environment, including reducing exposure to noisy equipment and aversive clinic sounds. That guidance concerns veterinary settings and does not establish that household cats prefer white noise. See the Cat Friendly Veterinary Environment Guidelines.
Should you try white noise during storms or fireworks?
You can try it as one small environmental adjustment if outside sounds are disturbing your cat, but do not force the cat to stay near the sound or leave a preferred hiding place. Virginia Tech’s Veterinary Teaching Hospital describes acoustic layering—using a fan or a white noise machine to mask ambient frequencies—alongside a quiet interior refuge for storm and fireworks anxiety. Its advice does not specify a validated volume, distance, or playback duration for cats. Read Virginia Tech’s guidance on storm and fireworks anxiety.

Make the refuge the priority
Reduce the noise source where feasible and let your cat access a familiar, quiet retreat. A cat that has chosen a safe hiding spot should not be pulled out to test white noise. Sound masking is optional; a refuge is part of the broader effort to make the environment feel safer.

Start quietly and watch your cat
If you decide to try white noise, begin at a low volume and place the device away from your cat. The cited guidance does not provide a proven household setting or duration, so there is no evidence-based decibel target to follow. Watch your cat’s behavior: if it avoids the area, hides more, or otherwise appears distressed, turn the sound off and return to quiet.

Know when to ask a veterinarian
A sound machine is not a substitute for veterinary care when fear is severe or persistent. Discuss ongoing noise-related distress with your veterinarian, who can help assess your cat’s needs and appropriate options.

| Option | What it may do | What the evidence establishes |
|---|---|---|
| White noise machine | May mask disruptive ambient sounds. | PetMD and Virginia Tech describe it as an optional masking measure; there is no controlled evidence here that it reliably calms cats. |
| Fan | May contribute to masking background sound. | Virginia Tech includes a fan in acoustic layering guidance for storm and fireworks anxiety; the guidance does not establish an ideal setting for cats. |
| Cat-specific music | Provides music rather than simply masking sound. | A 2019 veterinary-clinic study found an association with lower cat stress and handling scores during physical examinations, but no effect on the measured neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio. It was not a white-noise study and does not prove that all cats prefer music. Read the cat-specific music study. |
Clinic findings about cat-specific music should not be treated as proof that white noise helps at home. For any option, your cat’s observed response is more useful than assuming a sound category is inherently calming.
