A 2025 study found optical contrast between 146 deer signposts and nearby environmental features, suggesting the marks could have a visual dimension alongside their established scent role. It did not test whether deer actually use the glow to communicate.
What the study found
In a 2025 study in Ecology and Evolution, researchers examined 146 white-tailed deer signposts: 109 antler rubs on trees and 37 scent-marking scrapes. They compared the marks with environmental features under UV illumination peaking at 365 and 395 nanometers (nm). The signposts showed significant optical contrast against their surroundings (p < 0.001).

The work was conducted in Georgia. A University of Georgia report published January 14, 2026 describes researchers searching for marks by day and examining them with UV lights at night over three months in Whitehall Forest and an 800-acre area. The study’s analyzed sample was 146 signposts.
What “glow” means here
The precise term is UV-induced photoluminescence: a material emits light after absorbing UV light. The marks did not generate light spontaneously in this experiment, so this is not bioluminescence and does not mean they glow unaided in total darkness. The University of Georgia says UV lights were needed to see the marks in the way studied.

Researchers used instruments to measure emitted light. A 365 nm UV flashlight may help a curious observer look for fluorescence, but a consumer flashlight is not a spectrophotometer and cannot reproduce the study’s quantitative measurements.
What the urine measurements show
Scrape urine produced greater average irradiance than surrounding forest-floor material under 395 nm excitation (p = 0.005), with reported emission at approximately 480–600 nm. Under 365 nm excitation, urine emission also spanned approximately 480–600 nm and included a distinct peak around 420–460 nm.

The study authors noted that the 420–460 nm peak overlaps with the 450–460 nm range previously described for white-tailed deer short-wave-sensitive cones, citing Jacobs et al. (1994). This is a comparison with prior visual physiology, not evidence from the experiment that deer noticed or responded to the marks.

Could deer use the glow to communicate?
White-tailed deer already use signposts as scent-marking sites. They rub antlers on trees and leave urine at scrapes, creating olfactory information for other deer. The new study raises the possibility that UV-induced contrast adds a visual cue to that established scent system.

The authors proposed that rub fluorescence may involve tree or plant sap and secretions from deer forehead glands, while scrape fluorescence likely involves urine. These are suggested sources; the study did not isolate and identify every compound responsible.
A 2024 review of cervid visual ecology discusses UV sensitivity and the possibility that urine marks could visually indicate an olfactory signal. It also calls for more work on cervid UV sensitivity and urine spectra. That context supports treating visual signaling as an open question, not an established behavior across deer species.

What the findings do not establish
- That deer use the glow as a signal: the study measured optical properties, not deer behavior or responses to illuminated signposts.
- That the marks evolved to glow: the experiment does not show that photoluminescence is an adaptation for communication.
- That all deer species see or use signposts this way: the study concerned white-tailed deer only.
- How often deer perceive the cue in the wild: the sources report no population-level estimate of visual use.
