Usually, no—not established tartar. Some specific dog dental water additives can help slow new plaque or tartar buildup, but they should not be treated as products that dissolve or remove hardened deposits already on the teeth. Their evidence and accepted claims vary by product. Daily brushing and veterinary dental care remain central.
Why plaque and tartar are not the same
Plaque is a soft, bacteria-rich film that forms on teeth. Bacteria in mature plaque can inflame the gums. Tartar, also called calculus, is mineralized plaque: a hard deposit that resists removal by chewing or brushing. Its rough surface can also encourage further plaque development. The Veterinary Oral Health Council (VOHC) distinguishes products that help control plaque from those that help control tartar. VOHC’s definitions and protocols explain the difference.
That distinction matters when reading a product claim. A product listed for plaque is not automatically listed for tartar, or vice versa. Some named additives have accepted claims for both, but that does not establish that all water additives work alike.
What the evidence says about water additives
A controlled study found less buildup after professional cleaning
A 2023 randomized study tested one pomegranate-containing formulation, Vet Aquadent FR3SH, in 40 client-owned dogs. All dogs first had professional scaling and polishing. For the following 30 days, 20 received the additive daily in their drinking water and 20 received no additive; the team assessing dental outcomes was blinded to group assignment. The study report found lower median plaque scores in the additive group than in controls at day 30 (1.22 versus 2.31), and lower median calculus scores (0.25 versus 0.33). The differences were statistically significant (p < 0.05).

Those figures are dental index scores, not percentages of plaque or tartar removed. The study supports a limited conclusion: under the tested conditions, this formulation helped limit accumulation after professional cleaning. Its authors explicitly state it could not remove existing deposits; mechanical scraping or professional cleaning is usually needed to remove plaque and calculus that are already present. The study involved one formulation, 40 dogs and 30 days, so it does not establish that every additive works or how products compare.
VOHC acceptance is product-specific
VOHC awards separate seals for products that help control plaque and products that help control tartar. For chemical agents, its policy considers both whether use reduces plaque and/or calculus accumulation against a control and whether it avoids increased gingivitis; it also addresses safety review at the concentration used. VOHC reviews data submitted by product sponsors and says it does not test products itself. Acceptance therefore reflects evidence reviewed against its requirements, not a promise that a product removes established tartar, prevents every dental disease or replaces veterinary care. See VOHC’s protocols.

- ODORLESS AND FLAVORLESS FOR DOGS THAT NOTICE CHANGES: Contains no detectable taste or odor so dogs that refuse flavored dental products or monitor their water closely will continue drinking normally with consistent daily use.
- BAKING SODA AND CALCIUM FOR COMPLETE ORAL CARE: Unlike standard water additives, this formula adds calcium alongside baking soda — providing both the deodorizing and plaque-fighting action of baking soda and enamel support from calcium.
- HELPS REDUCE PLAQUE AND TARTAR DAILY: Baking soda enhanced formula is designed to help reduce plaque formation and slow tartar buildup on tooth surfaces over time when used consistently in a fresh water bowl every day.
- SUPPORTS TEETH, GUMS, AND ENAMEL: Calcium and vitamins in the formula support gum tissue health and tooth enamel as structural building blocks, extending the dental benefit beyond basic breath freshening water additives.
- SUITABLE FOR MULTI-DOG HOUSEHOLDS: Odorless, flavorless formula works in a shared water bowl without flavor conflicts, making it practical for homes with multiple adult dogs who drink from the same water source daily.
The current VOHC accepted-products list includes examples with different claims: HealthyMouth Water Additive for Dogs is listed for plaque, Bluestem Water Additive for tartar, and Virbac C.E.T. AQUADENT FR3SH for plaque and tartar. These examples show why it is important to check the exact product and claim; they are not a performance ranking. The online list can change.

- Check the exact product and claim. Consult the current VOHC list and confirm whether the named product is accepted for plaque, tartar or both. Follow the product’s directions.
- Keep brushing in the routine. VOHC identifies brushing as the gold standard for home dental care. An additive is better understood as a possible supplement to ongoing plaque control, not a substitute for brushing. VOHC’s home page also recommends periodic veterinary examinations.
- Arrange veterinary assessment when needed. An additive cannot take the place of an examination or professional scaling when deposits need physical removal. If you notice hardened buildup, pain, bleeding, bad breath, difficulty eating or another concerning change, ask a veterinarian to assess your dog rather than relying on an additive as treatment.
Many pets, particularly middle-aged and older animals, may need professional scaling in addition to ongoing plaque control, according to VOHC. The right care plan depends on the individual dog and the veterinarian’s assessment.
