Fish anatomy varies, and a rear bubble alone does not prove digestive flatulence.
What does “fart” mean for a fish?
For mammals, a fart usually means gas produced in the digestive tract and expelled through the anus. A bubble leaving a fish’s rear could have that origin, but it could also come from a different organ: the swim bladder.
The swim bladder is a gas-filled organ that helps many fish regulate buoyancy. In some fish, it has an open connection to the gut or anal duct, allowing gas to pass out through the rear. In other fish, the bladder is closed off in adults and its gas is regulated through exchange with the blood. So a bubble’s exit point does not, by itself, reveal where the gas came from.
What happens in herring?
Herring provide a documented example of gas leaving through the rear. The study “Sounds produced by herring (Clupea harengus) bubble release” (2003) reports: “Bubbles are usually released through the anal opening, connected to the swim bladder.” The bubbles may be released during ascent or descent, or in response to distress.

This is evidence that herring can release swim-bladder gas through their anal opening. It is not evidence that the gas was produced by digestion, so describing the observation as a digestive fart would go beyond what the study establishes.
Do all fish release gas this way?
No single answer applies to all fish. Swim-bladder anatomy and gas regulation differ among species. Some have a canal connecting the bladder to the gut; others lack an open connection as adults. A study of sprat describes the open canal in physostomous fish in the context of coordinated gas release, but that does not establish that all fish pass digestive gas.

Researchers have also measured the composition of gas in fish swim bladders. J. B. Wittenberg’s 1958 paper, “The Secretion of Oxygen into the Swim Bladder of Fish”, states that the gas mixture secreted into the swim bladders of several fish species was determined using a mass spectrometer. Such measurements concern the swim bladder, not digestive flatulence.

A published statistic on how often fish pass digestive gas, or what that digestive gas contains, is not established by the cited studies. One older study by P. F. Scholander and L. van Dam sampled 26 species (260 specimens) at known depths from 200 to 950 meters, but its subject was swim-bladder gas composition—not the frequency of digestive farting.

That distinction matters: evidence that a fish stores or releases gas for buoyancy cannot be converted into a count of digestive farts. The available observations support a careful answer about rear bubbles, not a ranking of fish species by flatulence or a claim that fish fart just like mammals.

How to interpret a bubble from a fish
- Where it exits: A bubble from the rear shows where it left the fish, not necessarily where the gas originated.
- What the swim bladder does: It is a separate gas source associated with buoyancy, and in some fish it connects to the gut or anal duct.
- What has been demonstrated: Herring bubbles usually pass through the anal opening via a swim-bladder connection; the cited observation does not show digestive gas.
- What remains unestablished: How often fish pass digestive gas and which species do so have not been established by the studies described here.
