Usually, yes—if you’re storing nightcrawlers for a later fishing trip. Keep them in a refrigerator in loose, damp bedding, and do not let them freeze. Other fishing worms, such as red wigglers, may need different conditions, so identify the worm before choosing where to store it.
Which fishing worms should be refrigerated?
Refrigeration is common guidance for nightcrawlers (Lumbricus terrestris). Penn State Extension notes that anglers store nightcrawlers in a refrigerator, and the Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission describes refrigerated storage for them. Do not assume the same advice applies to every worm sold for bait. Penn State distinguishes nightcrawlers from red wigglers, which are suited to warmer indoor conditions. Check the label or ask the bait shop what species you have before selecting a storage temperature. Penn State Extension
How to store nightcrawlers between fishing trips
- Use bedding that stays loose and damp. It should retain moisture without becoming waterlogged. The Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission describes loose, damp, enriched bedding for refrigerated nightcrawlers. Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission
- Keep the container cool and out of freezing conditions. A refrigerator is common advice for nightcrawlers, but do not let the worms or bedding freeze.
- Choose suitable bedding for longer storage. Louisiana Sea Grant advises commercial bedding rather than soil for extended holding. Louisiana Sea Grant
- Check the bedding regularly. Keep it damp, not saturated, and replace or adjust it if it becomes waterlogged or dries out.
Is there one ideal refrigerator temperature?
The available recommendations do not establish a universal refrigerator setting for all fishing worms. A Kansas 4-H guide gives a range of 45°F to 65°F for worm storage, while a Canadian nightcrawler seller recommends about 40°F; those recommendations differ and do not establish a single optimum across species. Follow species-specific packaging or supplier advice when available, and avoid freezing the worms. Kansas 4-H guide · Canadian nightcrawler seller

How long can refrigerated nightcrawlers last?
The Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission says nightcrawlers can last several weeks in a refrigerator when their bedding remains loose, damp, and enriched. Treat that as a conditional estimate, not a guarantee: actual keeping time can vary with worm type, packaging, bedding, and refrigerator conditions. Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission

For a short fishing outing, keep the bait cool and prevent the bedding from drying out or becoming soaked. For storage between trips—especially with nightcrawlers—refrigeration is the more appropriate option. Do not leave worms where they can overheat or freeze.
