Do Orangutan Mothers Seek Out Playmates for Their Young?

Wild Bornean orangutan mothers’ movements were associated with rare peer play among offspring close in age, alongside more travel and less feeding for mothers.

In a 15-year study of wild Bornean orangutans in Central Kalimantan, mothers’ ranging patterns were linked to more opportunities for their young to play with nearby offspring of similar ages. The mothers traveled farther and spent less time feeding on days when the young played. The findings suggest maternal facilitation, but do not prove that mothers consciously arrange play or that play gives offspring a lasting advantage.

What did the researchers observe?

The study analyzed about 32,600 hours of behavioral and movement records collected over 15 years from 31 wild Bornean orangutan mother-offspring pairs at Tuanan Research Station in Central Kalimantan, Indonesia. The results apply to this population and field site; they should not automatically be generalized to every orangutan population or other apes.

Orangutans are highly solitary, but solitary living does not mean they never associate. The study examined how mothers’ movements, mother-mother associations, and offspring peer play fit together. Its central finding was that offspring pairs closer in age played together more often, even after the researchers accounted for factors including maternal relatedness and fruit availability. Mothers whose offspring were similar in age also used shared forest areas more intensively, largely by making overlapping use of ranges rather than clearly shifting range boundaries.

How often did young orangutans play together?

The study authors reported infant peer play on 6.32% of full follow days. The Max Planck Society’s summary rounded that to six percent, or roughly once every 20 days. On days when play occurred, the summary estimates about 20 minutes of total peer play; that is not an average across all observation days. For comparison, mother-mother association occurred on 11.9% of full follow days, and peer play was a subset of those observed social days.

How might mothers facilitate play?

On days when mothers associated, they traveled farther and spent less time feeding than on other days. Both patterns were more pronounced when the infants played. Mothers also tended to move toward a play partner’s core area before play and return toward their own area afterward.

Together, these movement patterns suggest that mothers may facilitate encounters between their young, sometimes across multiple days. They do not show that researchers directly observed conscious planning or that mothers deliberately scheduled playdates. As senior author Maria van Noordwijk put it, “We reveal a hidden cost of solitary living,” referring to the extra movement and lost feeding time associated with social opportunities.

What does the study say about the cost and benefit?

The immediate tradeoff observed was maternal: more travel and less feeding around associations, especially on play days. The study did not establish whether peer play improves young orangutans’ later social skills, survival, or other outcomes. Coauthor Sri Suci Utami Atmoko noted that “We still don’t know if the time and energy mothers spend arranging playdates give their young an advantage later in life.”

The primary paper describes the movement evidence as suggesting that encounters are actively pursued. That is an interpretation of observed ranging and feeding patterns, not proof of intent or a demonstrated long-term developmental payoff.
