Do Some Cat Breeds Cost More to Insure Than Others?

Yes. Some insurers charge more for certain cat breeds, and breed can also change what a policy will cover. How much it matters depends on the insurer, the cat’s location and age, and the plan’s design. Breed differences for cats appear to be smaller than for dogs, but no single breed surcharge applies across the market.

How much breed can change the premium

The clearest industry-level figure comes from the National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC). Its 2019 pet insurance white paper, Pet Insurance: A Discussion of Coverage, Pricing, and Regulation, describes the highest-rated cat breed category as typically costing 0% to 50% more than the lowest-rated category. That is a typical range across the rating categories the NAIC describes, not a current price for any named breed, and it does not reflect any particular insurer’s filings. Because the figure dates to 2019, check current quotes before relying on the percentage.

The NAIC’s pet insurance paper also describes around 50 breeds used in general rating discussions. The same paper includes a hypothetical rate example built around a dog. That example should not be read as a cat premium or a market average.

Why insurers rate some breeds differently

Insurers price risk. Many cat breeds carry known inherited or breed-associated health conditions, and a policy that pays for those treatments is more likely to be claimed on. The UK charity Cats Protection makes the same point in its guidance on pedigree cats, saying pedigree cats usually cost more to insure than a moggy (a mixed-breed cat), because they may have additional health needs that can be costly to treat. That guidance comes from the UK and describes a general pattern, not a rule that applies to every UK policy.

Breed is one input among several. The NAIC lists the rating considerations as including location, age, and plan design, so two cats of the same breed can receive very different quotes.

Breeds commonly named as costlier to insure

A 2026 Cats.com article by Jackie Brown, dated April 13, 2026, lists the following breeds as ones that may cost more to insure:

  • Abyssinian
  • Bengal
  • Burmese
  • Devon Rex
  • Persian
  • Maine Coon
  • Munchkin
  • Ragdoll
  • Savannah
  • Scottish Fold
  • Siamese
  • Sphynx

Treat this list as a secondary-source guide to where premiums may be higher, not a ranking. Neither the list nor its order establishes how any particular insurer rates these breeds, and a breed missing from the list may still be rated higher by a given company.

Breed can change coverage, not just price

The Texas Department of Insurance’s consumer guidance, 5 questions to ask when buying pet insurance (last updated June 23, 2022), states that some insurers charge more for some breeds, may not sell plans for certain breeds, or limit coverage for hereditary conditions. The guidance quotes the rule directly: “Some plans limit coverage for medical conditions that may be hereditary for a breed of dog or cat.” It adds: “These limits vary by company so check around if a company charges more to cover your pet’s breed.”

This means a cheaper quote can carry narrower protection for the conditions most likely to matter for your cat. Read the wording for hereditary and congenital conditions before comparing prices.

How to compare quotes like for like

  1. Get a quote for the same cat, with the same age, address, and coverage settings, from each insurer you are considering. Published category ranges cannot predict an individual quote.
  2. Ask whether the insurer accepts your cat’s breed. Some companies decline certain breeds outright.
  3. Check in writing how hereditary and congenital conditions are covered: covered in full, limited, or excluded.
  4. Compare the plan terms listed in the table below, not just the monthly premium.
  5. Confirm how claims are paid. Texas guidance says most plans reimburse the owner after the veterinary bill is paid.

The terms to compare side by side

Term What to check Why it matters
Premium Quoted for the same cat, address, and coverage configuration Only a like-for-like quote shows real price differences
Hereditary and congenital conditions Covered, limited, or excluded, as written in the policy Breed-linked exclusions can matter more than the premium
Deductible Type (annual or per condition) and amount Sets what you pay before reimbursement starts
Reimbursement or coinsurance Percentage the insurer pays after the deductible Determines your share of each covered bill
Payout limits Per-condition and annual maximums Caps what the policy pays for a serious illness
Pre-existing conditions How the policy defines and treats them Texas guidance says pre-existing conditions are rarely covered
Other exclusions and eligibility Breed acceptance and any other excluded conditions Determines whether the policy will pay at all for your cat

Texas guidance also notes that plans with more coverage generally cost more, so a lower premium often reflects narrower terms rather than a better deal.

UK and US differences

Cats Protection’s breed guidance is UK-specific and should not be read as a US rate claim. American quotes depend on the individual insurer’s filings and state rules, which can differ from UK practice. Use the UK guidance to understand why pedigree cats are often rated higher, then confirm the actual terms with the insurer offering the policy in your country.

What the evidence does and does not establish

The evidence supports three conclusions: breed can affect premiums at some insurers, breed-linked limits on hereditary conditions can affect coverage, and the size of the difference varies widely. It does not establish a current, authoritative table of premiums by individual breed, and no breed carries a fixed surcharge across insurers. The NAIC figures are from 2019, the Texas guidance from 2022, and the Cats.com breed list from April 2026, so each should be read with its date.
