Do Tuna Fish Have to Keep Swimming?

Tuna use forward movement to send water over their gills and absorb oxygen. Here’s how ram ventilation works, and why it doesn’t establish a universal swimming speed or explain tuna sleep.

Yes—in the practical biological sense, tuna need to keep moving forward to get water flowing over their gills and absorb oxygen. This is called ram ventilation. NOAA Fisheries explains the mechanism with albacore: they swim with their mouths open because they lack the structures needed to pump oxygen-rich water across their gills themselves.

How swimming helps tuna breathe

Like other fish, tuna take oxygen from water as it passes over their gills. In tuna, forward movement drives that flow: as a tuna swims, water enters its open mouth and passes over the gills. NOAA Fisheries describes albacore as constantly swimming with their mouths open to breathe.

Scientists call this way of ventilating the gills ram ventilation. A NOAA-hosted scientific paper describes tunas as obligate ram ventilators, meaning they rely on forward movement to move water past their gills.

Does every tuna need to swim at a particular speed?

The sources establish the need for forward movement, not one universal minimum speed. NOAA Fisheries uses albacore to explain the breathing mechanism, while the scientific paper examines skipjack and yellowfin physiology under particular conditions. Those examples support the general explanation, but they do not establish a single speed threshold for every tuna species or situation.

Does this mean tuna never rest?

Not necessarily. The fact that tuna rely on swimming to ventilate their gills does not, by itself, explain how they rest or sleep. NOAA Ocean Service’s general discussion of fish rest does not establish tuna-specific sleep behavior, so it cannot answer that follow-up.
