The zoo has not confirmed that Punch has a “girlfriend.” Ichikawa City Zoo documents Punch’s earlier contact with a gentle young female macaque and his later integration with the troop, but says it will not disclose the names or individual profiles of macaques other than Punch. By his first birthday, the Associated Press reported that Punch was mingling and playing with other monkeys and no longer holding his plush.
“Girlfriend” is best understood as a fan or headline label for a visible social bond, not an official relationship status. Punch’s documented progress is his growing contact with other macaques after being hand-reared.
Why people call Punch’s companion his “girlfriend”
Videos and online discussion have prompted fans to describe a female macaque as Punch’s girlfriend. But the zoo’s published statements do not confirm that label or identify a particular macaque as his partner. In a May 1, 2026 statement, the zoo said it had chosen not to disclose the names or personalities of macaques other than Punch.
The zoo’s account does describe Punch spending time with a gentle young female macaque as part of his preparation for joining the troop. That is evidence of social contact, not a confirmed romance or an official identification of the animal shown in online clips.

Who is Punch?
Punch is a Japanese macaque (Macaca fuscata), commonly called a snow monkey, at Ichikawa City Zoological and Botanical Garden in Japan. The zoo says he was hand-reared after his mother was unable to raise him.
Keepers used a stuffed toy and towels to give Punch something to cling to and comfort himself with. The zoo says it also uses this approach with other artificially reared primates. It described its primary goal as reintegrating Punch with the troop.

- Measures approximately 9" long x 8.5" wide, when sitting down
How Punch was introduced to the troop
The zoo described a staged introduction rather than a sudden placement among the troop. Its February 27, 2026 statement says Punch first had contact with other monkeys through fences, then visited the monkey mountain enclosure with caretakers, and spent time with a gentle young female macaque before entering the troop on January 19, 2026.
- From around three months old, Punch had contact with other monkeys through fences.
- After four months, he visited the monkey mountain enclosure with caretakers.
- He spent a period with a gentle young female macaque.
- He entered the troop on January 19, 2026.
The zoo’s stated aim was to reintegrate Punch with the troop while avoiding excessive dependence on humans. Contact with a female macaque during this process should not be confused with confirmation of a “girlfriend.”

What is known about Punch’s plush?
The zoo confirms that keepers provided a stuffed toy and towels for Punch to hold onto during hand-rearing. It says these items simulated clinging and provided comfort. The zoo’s cited statement does not identify a brand or model for the toy.
A secondary Punch information site identifies the plush as IKEA’s DJUNGELSKOG orangutan soft toy, but that model attribution is not confirmed by the zoo. A toy used in hand-rearing is not a substitute for specialized animal care or social contact with other macaques.

How Punch’s story changed by his first birthday
Associated Press reported on July 25, 2026, that Punch was mingling and playing with the troop around his first birthday and no longer holding the plush. ABC News had earlier reported in April that Punch seldom relied on the toy and was socializing with other monkeys.
These reports describe a change from the early hand-rearing period, when the plush and towels helped Punch cling and find comfort, toward more interaction with other macaques. They do not establish a romantic relationship or reveal the full state of Punch’s welfare.
