Photographer Katie Brockman won the 2026 Dog Photography Awards overall title and Studio category with Loved and Hated, a portrait of her dog Caldwell. The image uses a crown and a chain-and-collar motif to challenge the contradictory ways people view pitbulls and bully breeds—not to answer a scientific question about breed behavior.
What did Katie Brockman win?
The official Dog Photography Awards winner page names Brockman Dog Photographer of the Year 2026 and identifies her winning image as Loved and Hated. Digital Camera World’s 4 October 2026 report says the portrait also won the Studio category.
Digital Camera World reports that the 2026 competition received roughly 1,900 entries from 50 countries. It says Brockman received a €700 prize, an engraved trophy, and a spotlight in the competition’s annual book and winners’ gallery. The entry count and prize details are figures reported by that outlet; they are not stated in the official winner profile.
What does the portrait mean?
Brockman told the organizers that she wanted to show “society’s complicated relationship with pitbulls and bully breeds.” In the official description, the image reflects a divide: some people villainize these dogs, while others love them and work to protect them.

Brockman said the collar and chain represent breed bans, restrictions, and other ways pitbulls are punished. Digital Camera World reports that the crown and collar incorporate real newspaper clippings, with headlines that praised as well as demonized pitbulls. The materials bring those opposing public messages into the portrait itself.
Who is Caldwell?
Caldwell is Brockman’s dog, adopted from a rescue center after spending three years there, according to Digital Camera World. The official photographer profile says Brockman, who is based in St. Louis, Missouri, began taking photographs after Caldwell underwent emergency surgery for an obstruction on Christmas Eve 2020. She realized she did not have enough pictures of him, saved for a camera to document their adventures, and began her dog-photography journey in 2021.

Does the photograph show whether pitbulls are dangerous?
No. Loved and Hated expresses Brockman’s artistic perspective on public attitudes, breed restrictions, and the competing stories told about pitbulls. It is not a behavioral study or evidence about the safety of any breed. The question “What makes a pitbull dangerous—nature or nurture?” is a framing question raised in the coverage, not one this portrait or the reporting answers.

The sources reviewed do not identify the camera or lens used to make Loved and Hated. Brockman’s profile says she saved for a camera after Caldwell’s surgery, but it does not connect a particular model or setup to the award-winning portrait.
