Does Your Cat Need a Friend? How to Tell If Your Cat Is Lonely

Most cats do not need another cat. Learn why behavior changes need a veterinary check first, how to read cat relationships, and when a second cat could suit your home.

Most cats do not need another cat to be content, and a change in behavior is not, on its own, evidence of loneliness. The more useful question is what is driving the change and whether your cat already has enough interaction, play, predictability, and resources. For most households there are three reasonable routes: arrange a veterinary assessment when behavior has changed, enrich the daily life of the cat you have, and consider a second cat only if the cat’s history and your home realistically support one.

Start with the companionship myth

The 2024 intercat tension guidelines from the American Association of Feline Practitioners (AAFP) state that “Cats do not necessarily need companionship.” The same guidance asks caregivers to weigh the pros and cons of acquiring a new cat as a companion for another cat, rather than treating adoption as the default answer to a behavior question.

Individual cats differ. Some form close, lasting bonds with other cats; others are happiest as the only cat in the home. A new cat can improve one animal’s social environment while distressing another, particularly when the cats are not bonded or cannot easily avoid one another.

What behavior changes can and cannot tell you

Owners often notice more clinginess or vocalizing, a cat that hides more, changes in appetite or sleep, or grooming that has become unusual. These changes deserve attention, but they are nonspecific. Pain, illness, a disrupted environment, grief after the loss of a companion, and tension with another cat can all produce similar signs. No single behavior proves that a cat is lonely, and there is no reliable checklist that diagnoses loneliness at home.

When to involve a veterinarian first

  • Abrupt changes in eating, drinking, or litter box use.
  • Changes in sleep or hiding that persist rather than passing.
  • Changes in mobility, comfort, or grooming, including grooming that becomes excessive or leaves the coat in poor condition.
  • A sustained increase in attention-seeking or vocalizing without an obvious trigger.

The veterinary and welfare sources reviewed here do not set numeric thresholds for how long a change must last before it counts as significant. As a practical rule, book a veterinary visit whenever a change is sudden, continues, or affects eating, toileting, movement, or comfort. Do not treat adopting a second cat as the first response to those signs.

Reading the relationship between cats

If you already share your home with more than one cat, look for reciprocal comfort rather than simple proximity. Cats who share a room are not necessarily bonded. Cats who seek each other out, sleep in contact, or groom one another show a stronger sign of connection.

What you may see What it can suggest
Seeking each other out, sleeping in contact, mutual grooming, rubbing against each other A bond, or at least comfortable tolerance
Hiding, walking away, avoiding each other while sharing space Subtle tension that is easy to miss
Staring, one cat blocking access to food, water, litter, or routes through the home Tension that can affect welfare even without visible fighting
Hissing, swiping, chasing, or fighting Overt conflict that needs changes to the set-up and veterinary input

A cat’s response to other cats is useful context but not a conclusive home test. Consider its history: has it bonded with a cat before, or does it avoid, chase, hiss at, or mark around unfamiliar cats? Cats can accept one companion and reject another.

Three routes to choose from

Route 1: Book a veterinary assessment

Start here when behavior has changed. Bring a short written note of what changed, when it began, and how often it happens, along with anything else that has shifted in the home, such as a move, new furniture, a visitor, or the loss of another animal. Your veterinarian can rule out medical causes before you interpret the change as a social need.

Route 2: Enrich the routine of the cat you have

A one-cat household can meet a cat’s needs when the caregiver provides appropriate interaction, exercise, play, and mental stimulation. The VCA client guidance and the 2025 Feline Veterinary Medical Association (FelineVMA) handout point to the same basics:

  • Daily positive human interaction, ideally at predictable times, so the cat can anticipate it.
  • Play sessions that mimic hunting, with a wand toy or interactive toy the cat can chase, stalk, and catch.
  • Safe places such as elevated resting spots, a cat tree, or a hiding box that the cat can use without competition.
  • Food puzzles, which simulate hunting by making the cat work for its meals. A puzzle feeder is an optional enrichment tool. It is not a cure for loneliness and does not replace veterinary assessment or social interaction.

Route 3: Assess whether a second cat could suit both animals

This route makes sense when the cat’s history suggests it enjoys other cats, your home has space to separate resources, and you can commit to a slow introduction. The conditions below matter more than the cat’s sex or simply having a spare bed.

Before adding a second cat: resources and matching

Resources

Before adoption, assess whether both cats can reach food, water, litter trays, beds, hiding places, and elevated resting areas without passing the other cat. FelineVMA’s handout recommends one of each listed resource per cat plus one extra, placed with visual separation. Cats Protection advises one item per cat plus a spare for core resources. Treat these as practical starting points rather than a guarantee of compatibility.

Matching the individuals

Match temperament, age, and activity level where possible. An energetic kitten may overwhelm a senior or quiet adult cat. Health, the resident cat’s socialization, and past encounters with other cats all matter. FelineVMA recommends recent veterinary checkups for both the resident cat and the incoming cat. Its handout cautions against adding a cat when the resident is elderly or has significant health issues, so discuss the specific case with your veterinarian. If a local rescue offers foster-to-adopt, it provides a reversible way to test compatibility before committing. Not every shelter offers this option.

When comparing potential companions, Cats Protection notes that sex alone is not a reliable preference marker. Ask the rescue what it knows about each candidate’s behavior with other cats.

After a companion cat has died

Allow the surviving cat time to return to its baseline rather than treating a new cat as a replacement. VCA lists searching, vocalizing, changes in appetite or grooming, and changes in attention-seeking among possible responses. Some cats show no obvious change at all. An unfamiliar cat arriving during this period may add stress.

Deciding between enrichment and a second cat

When the choice is between a single-cat enrichment plan and adopting a second cat, compare the options against the factors below.

Factor What to consider
Social history Has this cat demonstrably bonded with other cats, or has it avoided them?
Medical or stress explanations Has a veterinarian ruled out illness, pain, or environmental causes for the behavior change?
Space and resources Can the home provide separate food, water, litter, resting places, and routes?
Time for introduction Can you commit to a slow, staged introduction that may take weeks to months?
Whose preference Is the goal companionship for the cat, or a wish for another pet in the household?

Expect an individual timeline. FelineVMA says the process may take days to a few months, sometimes longer. VCA describes days, weeks, or months. Slow down, or seek veterinary or behavior support, if tension persists.

Signs of tension to watch for

  • Hiding, avoidance, or crouching.
  • Tense posture, dilated pupils, ears turned back, or a puffed tail.
  • Hissing, growling, stalking, blocking, chasing, or fighting.
  • A quiet cat that withdraws or cannot reach food, water, or litter. This may still be a cat under tension.

When tension does not settle

Make sure cats who do not socialize have ways to avoid one another, along with separate access to food, water, litter trays, resting places, and routes through the home. Do not force interaction. Persistent tension warrants a veterinary conversation, and challenging cases may need a board-certified veterinary behaviorist.

About the sources

This guidance draws on the 2024 AAFP intercat tension guidelines, the VCA client article last updated May 28, 2024, the 2025 FelineVMA handout Are You Thinking of Getting Another Cat(s)?, and welfare guidance from Cats Protection and the Northern Ireland government information site nidirect. The Cats Protection and nidirect text reviewed did not show a publication date. The AAFP survey figure is discussed below in context. In a 2024 AAFP survey, 73.3% of respondents said signs of intercat tension began with the introduction of a new cat. This describes the respondents’ reports in that survey. It is not the share of all introductions that lead to tension.

Because these sources are written for UK and US households, check your local rescue’s and veterinarian’s guidance for your own situation.
