You cannot reliably predict from a checklist whether a dog will be safe with every cat. But stiffening, sustained fixation, inability to disengage, or escalation into stalking, chasing, lunging, snapping, or grabbing are reasons to create distance and treat the situation as a safety risk. The eight signs below are practical warning observations, not a validated test or prediction score. This article is not described as vet-reviewed; have a veterinarian assess concerning behavior.
What the warning signs can—and cannot—tell you
Look at the pattern and context, not one cue in isolation. A brief glance or moment of curiosity is different from a dog that remains locked on, cannot respond to you, and intensifies when the cat moves. These observations are not a clinical scoring scale, and no single sign reliably predicts what a dog will do later.

Prey-driven pursuit and social aggression are not interchangeable. The Merck Veterinary Manual notes, “Predation is a normal canine behavior but can be dangerous.” Predatory behavior can include stalking, chasing, biting, and killing, sometimes with little warning. Do not wait for a growl before creating distance. Merck Veterinary Manual: Behavior Problems of Dogs

8 signs a dog may be unsafe around cats
1. The dog stiffens when the cat appears
A rigid or suddenly tense posture can signal intense focus. Stiffening is more concerning when it happens reliably around the cat or accompanies other warning signs.

2. The dog holds a hard stare
Brief interest that naturally breaks is less concerning than sustained fixation. A dog that keeps watching the cat and does not readily look away needs more distance and careful management.
3. The dog cannot be redirected
If your dog does not respond to a familiar cue, turn away, or otherwise disengage while the cat is present, the dog may be too aroused to manage safely at that distance. Do not move the cat closer to test the response.

5. The dog suddenly chases, especially when the cat moves
A moving cat can trigger pursuit. A dog that stays calm around a stationary cat has not thereby shown it will be safe when the cat runs, outdoors, or in another setting.

6. Vocalization or arousal escalates while the dog is focused
Barking or whining while fixated can accompany prey-related arousal. Vocalization alone does not establish intent, but it matters when paired with staring, stiffness, or inability to disengage.
7. The dog lunges or snaps
This is overt escalation. Separate the animals and seek professional assessment rather than trying another close introduction.

- End the exposure and increase distance. If the dog stiffens, fixates, becomes vocal while focused, or cannot disengage, calmly separate the animals. Do not bring the cat closer to “see what happens.”
- Use physical separation for early visual exposure. Begin with secure separation and scent exposure; when both animals are comfortable, brief visual sessions behind a secure barrier can be considered. A leash can help maintain control during supervised sessions, but it is not a reason to force close contact.
- Keep sessions brief and watch both animals. Adjust or end an exposure if either animal shows stress. Reward calm attention and the dog’s ability to look away; do not punish the dog, which may worsen the introduction problem.
- Do not leave them alone together while safety is uncertain. Keep kittens especially protected and separated whenever no one is watching; their small size makes them vulnerable even to rough play.
- Get help after escalation or persistent fixation. Lunging, snapping, an attempted grab, or continued inability to redirect calls for separation and professional guidance. AAHA includes aggression toward other animals, including cats, among behaviors warranting veterinary assessment, particularly when it emerges during social maturity. AAHA: Concerning Behaviors that Require Assessment
Why one calm meeting does not prove a dog is safe
Each dog-cat pairing and setting is different. A dog’s history with one cat does not guarantee compatibility with another, and behavior can change when a cat runs or the animals meet in a new environment. Observe each new situation cautiously, and continue separation whenever you cannot trust the dog around the cat. Some dogs cannot safely live with cats; gradual exposure or training cannot guarantee that every pairing will become safe.
