If your dog has been bitten, call a veterinarian promptly and arrange an examination—even if the wound looks small. Bite punctures can close quickly, hide under fur, and conceal crushing damage beneath the skin. While arranging care, use clean gauze and steady pressure for bleeding; home first aid is temporary, not a substitute for veterinary treatment.

1. Stabilize your dog while you arrange veterinary care

Call your veterinary clinic promptly and follow its instructions. An injured dog may react defensively because of pain or fear, so approach carefully and avoid forcing an examination or unnecessary handling.

  1. If the wound is bleeding: Place clean gauze or another clean, absorbent dressing over it and apply steady direct pressure. Keep the dressing in place to protect the wound during transport. Guidance from VCA Animal Hospitals supports absorbent dressings for pressure and transport protection.
  2. Keep your dog as calm and still as practical. Limit movement if the injury may be extensive, and transport your dog for assessment.
  3. Do not treat the wound with household products. Unless a veterinarian directs you, do not apply ointments, creams, disinfectants, hydrogen peroxide, or other chemicals. Do not probe, close, or medicate the wound yourself.

Direct pressure and protection are first aid only. They cannot show how deep a bite is or address damage under the skin.

2. Know when to go to an emergency clinic

Seek emergency veterinary care for any of the following signs or injuries:

#1 Best Overall
Vetericyn Plus Dog Wound Care Spray, Lick-Safe Wound & Skin Care, 3 oz
  • HEALING AID & SKIN REPAIR: Use a few times daily to flush dog cuts, abrasions, sores, and skin irritations
  • PET FIRST AID ESSENTIAL: Works great on all animals at all life stages to help provide relief to skin problems
  • SAFE & EFFECTIVE: Made with a non-toxic hypochlorous technology that is pH-balanced and safe if licked
  • VETERINARIAN RECOMMENDED: Support wound healing with this anxiety-free, cost-effective alternative to antibiotic or steroid ointments.
  • TRUSTED BRAND: Vetericyn is a leader in at-home animal health products manufactured to help pet owners take the best care of their animals
  • Bleeding that is uncontrolled or persistent
  • Difficulty breathing, weakness, pale or blue gums, or collapse
  • Severe trauma, such as being shaken by a larger animal
  • A very large or severely contaminated wound
  • A deep wound that may enter the chest or abdomen
  • A wound around the eyes, ears, nose, or throat

These signs can indicate a serious injury requiring urgent attention, as described in guidance from VCA Animal Hospitals and its urgent-care guidance for lacerations and abrasions. If none applies, still contact a veterinarian promptly: a bite wound should be assessed even when it appears minor.

3. Have a veterinarian assess and treat the wound

A surface check at home cannot reliably establish a bite’s depth. Fur can hide additional wounds, and a small puncture may conceal crushed or damaged tissue. A bite that breaks the skin can introduce bacteria beneath its surface; VCA describes bite wounds as contaminated or infected.

Depending on the injury, the veterinarian may clip away fur, examine and flush the wound, remove dead or severely damaged tissue, and provide pain relief. Sedation or anesthesia may be needed for a safe, thorough assessment. Antibiotics may be appropriate in some cases; that decision belongs to the veterinarian.

The clinic will decide how the wound should heal. Some wounds are left open to drain; a laceration may be closed, and an extensive injury may need a drain. The choice depends on the wound’s condition and should not be attempted at home. VCA’s guide to bite wounds in dogs outlines these clinical considerations.

Follow the veterinarian’s aftercare instructions

Keep a closed wound clean and dry as directed. If the wound is left open or a drain is placed, clean drainage only as the clinic instructs, and use only products the veterinarian recommends. Prevent licking as directed; the clinic may advise an Elizabethan collar.

Do not use hydrogen peroxide unless your veterinarian specifically tells you to. VCA cautions that it can delay healing and worsen the problem.
