The Veterinary Oral Health Council (VOHC) accepts specific products in both formats, and its claim is product-specific: an accepted product may be listed for reducing plaque, tartar (calculus), or both. Compare the claim for the exact product, then choose a format that suits your dog’s routine.
What does the VOHC seal tell you?
The VOHC says it recognizes products that meet preset standards for retarding plaque and calculus (tartar) in dogs and cats. Products earn its seal after the council reviews trial data produced under its protocols. The VOHC accepted-products list identifies the claim accepted for each product.
The council’s accepted-products list includes dog water additives and chews, but their claims are not interchangeable: some products are listed for plaque, some for tartar, and some for both. Its trial protocols also account for how products work and are used. For example, protocols distinguish mechanical products from those combining mechanical and chemical effects, and account for continuously available products such as water additives. This is evidence tied to an individual product’s listed claim, not a head-to-head ranking of formats.
VOHC’s FAQ says accepted products show statistically significant benefits compared with pets in a clinical trial that received no VOHC product. That comparison does not show whether an additive or a chew works better than the other.

How should you choose between an additive and a chew?
- Match the claim to your goal. Check whether the exact product is accepted for plaque, tartar, or both. Do not assume that every chew or every water additive has the same accepted claim.
- Consider the household routine. One format is added to drinking water; the other is a chew. The sources do not establish which format every dog will accept or which will be used more consistently in a particular household.
- Verify the exact product. Confirm that the product name appears on VOHC’s live list and review the claim shown there; do not rely on a general category label.
- Ask your veterinarian about your dog. If your dog has existing dental disease, another health condition, or you are unsure which product is appropriate, seek individual advice rather than treating the seal as a diagnosis or treatment recommendation.
Do either format replace veterinary dental care?
No. A VOHC seal concerns a product’s accepted plaque and/or calculus-retardation claim; it does not establish that the product treats every dental condition or replaces veterinary care. VOHC recommends periodic veterinary examinations of a dog’s mouth and teeth. For advice about an individual pet, it directs owners to a veterinarian or an AVDC-certified veterinary dental specialist.
