Then choose a secure, comfortable harness and a durable leash that gives you control. Gear cannot make an unfit dog ready for a difficult route or make a prohibited trail accessible.
Can I take my dog on this trail?
Check the current rules for the specific park, trail, or land manager before you go. Dog access and leash requirements differ—even between trails in the same destination. The Bureau of Land Management advises: “Please check the trail website or call the local BLM field office for specific leash policies.” BLM hiking guidance offers a starting point, but the local rules are what matter.
- Acadia National Park: Leashed pets are allowed in some areas, but the park requires leashes no longer than six feet and prohibits pets from specified ladder trails. Check Acadia’s current pet rules for locations and details.
- Rocky Mountain National Park: Pets are prohibited on all trails, tundra, and meadows. A leash or harness does not create an exception. See the park’s pet regulations.
Check for updated restrictions or closures shortly before travel, and contact the responsible land manager if a rule is unclear.
What harness is best for hiking with a dog?
The best choice is one that fits your dog securely, suits the dog’s comfort and behavior, and works for the terrain and trip. There is no basis for treating a particular harness cut, handle, clip position, or no-pull design as universally safest.
#1 Best Overall

- ADJUSTABLE FOR ALL DOG TYPES. Equipped with four points of adjustment and durable side-release buckles. Allows for a secure, dialed-in fit across a wide range of dog shapes and sizes, giving your pup freedom to move comfortably and naturally.
- REFLECTIVE AND LIGHT-READY. Includes reflective trim and a dedicated loop for our Beacon Light (sold separately). Enhances visibility in low-light conditions, helping your dog stand out at dawn or dusk.
Prioritize a secure fit
Measure your dog and follow the selected manufacturer’s current sizing instructions. The American Hiking Society advises that a harness should not be loose enough for a dog to slip out of; it also offers a finger-under-the-strap check as practical general guidance, not a universal manufacturer specification. See its hiking-with-dogs guidance.
Check the fit before the hike and watch for signs that your dog is uncomfortable or the harness is shifting. If you cannot get a secure fit with the model’s adjustment range, choose another size or design rather than relying on a leash to prevent escape.

Match the harness to your dog and the route
Consider how your dog moves, responds to handling, and tolerates wearing a harness, as well as the conditions you expect on the route. Read the maker’s instructions for fit, adjustment, and intended use. Available guidance does not establish one harness feature or style as best for every dog or mountain trail.
What leash should I use for mountain hikes?
Choose a durable leash that lets you maintain reliable control, then follow the destination’s exact leash policy. A short leash may help keep your dog close around other trail users, as the American Kennel Club notes in its hiking-with-dogs guidance. But there is no single leash length that is legal everywhere: Acadia’s six-foot maximum is a park rule, not a universal standard.

Before setting out, confirm whether the trail specifies a maximum leash length or other handling requirement. If your usual leash does not meet that rule or does not give you adequate control in the expected conditions, use a suitable alternative. Do not assume a retractable, long, or fixed-length leash is allowed without checking.
Is your dog ready for the mountain route?
Equipment cannot substitute for fitness. The National Park Service advises owners to consider their dog’s physical condition and consult a veterinarian if they are concerned. Think about the route’s distance, terrain, and conditions in relation to your dog’s current ability; do not assume a dog can manage a hike because it can walk comfortably on easier outings.

Plan for water and heat. The NPS recommends bringing extra water and monitoring dogs for overheating. On longer hikes, booties may help protect paws. For further trip-planning guidance, see the NPS page on hiking with pets.

Supporting gear should match the dog and the outing rather than being treated as mandatory for every hike. The NPS says owners may consider a pack for experienced hiking dogs and should follow the pack’s fit guidance so it sits snugly and securely. It also notes booties as an option for longer hikes.

Choose what is appropriate for your route and conditions, and make sure you can meet your dog’s needs without relying on the dog to carry essential supplies.
