Put a current phone number on your dog’s visible ID tag so a finder can contact you directly. The Oregon Veterinary Medical Association recommends adding the owner’s name and address as well; keep all details up to date. Rabies and dog-license tags are separate official identifiers whose requirements vary by location, and a microchip is useful backup—not a substitute for a visible tag.
What to put on an everyday dog ID tag
Make it easy for someone who finds your dog to reach you. At minimum, prioritize one current phone number that you can answer or receive messages at. The Oregon Veterinary Medical Association recommends including the owner’s name, address, and phone number. Include as much of that information as the tag can display clearly.
- Phone number: The most direct way for a finder to contact you.
- Owner’s name: Recommended by the Oregon Veterinary Medical Association.
- Address: Also recommended by the association; update it if you move.
- Dog’s name: Optional. The cited official guidance does not establish it as a requirement or universal safety recommendation, so treat it as a space-dependent choice.
The sources do not establish a universal legal minimum for the contents of an everyday ID tag. Local requirements for official tags are a separate matter.
Keep official rabies and license tags distinct
Rabies and dog-license tags may help identify a dog or point a finder toward the issuing agency, and some jurisdictions require them to be attached. Check your local animal-control or licensing authority for current rules rather than assuming one requirement applies nationwide. The Oregon Veterinary Medical Association’s identification guidance advises keeping required tags attached and current.

Requirements for other documents should not be mistaken for a universal collar-tag rule. For example, the Los Angeles County rabies manual says an official rabies vaccination certificate must include the owner’s name, address, and phone number, as well as the dog’s description and vaccination details. That is a rule for the certificate in that jurisdiction, not evidence that every dog’s collar tag must contain all of those details.
Visible tag, official tags, and microchip: how they differ
| Identifier | How a finder can use it | What to keep current | Main limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Everyday ID tag | Read the contact details and call or message the owner directly. | Phone number, name, and address if included. | Only helps this way while the collar and tag are on the dog and the information is readable. |
| Rabies or dog-license tag | Use the tag number or instructions to contact the issuer or follow the local lookup process. | Keep the tag and associated licensing or vaccination records current as local authorities direct. | Rules and lookup processes depend on the jurisdiction and issuing agency. |
| Microchip | A shelter, animal-control agency, or veterinary clinic scans the dog, then uses the identifier to locate registry information. | Keep the chip registered and update the registry’s contact details when they change. | It requires a scanner and an effective registry lookup; the chip itself does not provide a visible phone number. |
The American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) explains that a microchip is permanent identification but does not replace an up-to-date collar tag. A tag gives a finder a visible way to reach you; a chip can still help if the collar or tag is lost. A chip generally carries a unique identification number rather than your contact details, so registration and accurate registry information matter. The AVMA also notes that the United States has no single centralized pet microchip database.

Keep the tag attached and its details current
- Replace or update the tag promptly after a phone-number or address change.
- Use an attachment that is less likely to come loose. The Oregon Veterinary Medical Association specifically recommends O-rings.
- Consider a temporary tag when traveling so the contact route works away from home.
- Keep required license and rabies identification attached as local authorities direct.
- Update the microchip registry separately whenever your contact information changes.
If you find a dog
- Look for visible identification. If it is safe to approach the dog, check for an everyday ID or rabies tag.
- Try the printed contact route. Call or message the number on an everyday tag. A rabies or license tag may have a number or instructions that connect you to an agency or veterinary clinic.
- Ask about a microchip scan. If the owner cannot be reached, or there is no useful tag, contact a local shelter, animal-control agency, or veterinary clinic about scanning for a chip.
- Follow local procedures. Agencies differ in how they handle found dogs. Nashville Animal Care and Control advises finders to check for ID or rabies tags and have the pet scanned. Los Angeles County guidance says to call the number on a license or ID tag and contact animal control when the owner cannot be reached or no tag is present.
What local reunion figures can—and cannot—tell you
DC Health reports that its Animal Control Facility houses around 3,000 stray dogs and cats each year, with approximately 20% reunited with their owners. The page does not state the year for that figure. It describes one local facility, not a national rate or an estimate for all shelters and lost pets.
