Your dog may be entirely sincere about joining laundry day. The trouble is that a stolen shirt, a scattered clean pile, or a sock carried off for inspection can turn one chore into three: retrieve, sort, and fold again. If your dog likes to carry things, you can channel that enthusiasm into a cued job—but if you just want to finish the laundry, keeping clothes out of reach and calmly redirecting your dog is the simpler plan.
Why does my dog steal my dirty laundry?
Clothing holds interesting smells, which may help explain why some dogs investigate, carry, roll on, lick, or chew laundry. The American Kennel Club discusses scent as one likely draw, but a dog’s interest in a sock does not prove a particular motive. Carrying an item may also be enjoyable in itself, or it may prompt attention from a person.
That enthusiasm can look helpful: your dog arrives as soon as the hamper opens, selects a garment, and proudly relocates it. From the human side, the job description is less convincing when the clean pile is now on the floor.
How do I stop my dog from taking clothes?
Make laundry less available before the game starts. The American Kennel Club recommends restricting access to the sorting area, keeping sorted clothes out of reach, and putting laundry in a hamper or closed storage. The ASPCA also advises keeping dirty laundry in a hamper as part of dog-proofing.

- Close the door or use a gate to keep your dog out of the room while you sort and fold.
- Put clean clothes on a high surface or away in a drawer rather than leaving a tempting pile within reach.
- Use a hamper or other closed storage for dirty clothes, especially socks and small items.
- Offer an appropriate toy or puzzle while you work if your dog needs something to do. Enrichment can include puzzles and learning new skills; a predictable routine may also support emotional comfort, according to VCA Animal Hospitals.
These are management options, not guaranteed fixes. Choose the ones that fit your space and your dog, and supervise any toy or puzzle that your dog might chew apart or swallow.
What to do when your dog already has a garment
Try not to chase or scold. Chasing can turn the stolen item into the centerpiece of a game, and the American Kennel Club recommends staying calm and distracting the dog with a treat or toy while retrieving the garment. Once your dog is occupied and the item is safely recovered, put it somewhere inaccessible rather than restarting the chase.

If your dog stiffens, growls, snaps, or otherwise seems likely to guard the item, do not force it from their mouth or put yourself at risk. The ASPCA recommends professional behavior help when removing an object could trigger aggression.
Can my dog actually help with laundry?
Possibly, if your dog enjoys carrying objects and you want to make training part of the chore. The American Kennel Club describes teaching a dog to carry a laundry item or retrieve a dropped garment, but recommends establishing reliable fetch and “drop it” skills first, beginning with toys. A cued task gives the dog a clear start and finish; wandering off with whichever garment is closest is not the same job.

Choose this approach when you have time to teach and supervise. If your goal is a quiet, uninterrupted laundry session, block access and redirect your dog instead. Either way, distinguish carrying from chewing: fabric should not become an unsupervised chew toy.

Simply carrying a garment is different from swallowing it. If your dog eats fabric or repeatedly tries to, contact your veterinarian. UC Davis School of Veterinary Medicine notes that unusual eating can have medical or behavioral causes and recommends consulting a veterinarian to determine what may be behind it.

For a dog that guards stolen clothes, seek qualified behavior support rather than turning retrieval into a contest. The priority is safe handling, not getting the laundry back at any cost.
