Contact a veterinarian if your dog has gone more than 12 hours without eating; seek help sooner for emergency signs, and promptly call your veterinarian if a diabetic dog refuses even one meal.
First distinguish true anorexia (no interest in food) from pseudo-anorexia (interest in food but difficulty picking it up, chewing, or swallowing). That distinction can help your veterinarian assess the cause and urgency.
8 reasons your dog may not be eating
1. Dental or mouth pain
A dog may want to eat but stop because chewing hurts. Possible causes include periodontal disease, a loose or broken tooth, inflammation in the mouth or throat, jaw injury, salivary-gland problems, or an oral tumor.
Look for signs such as approaching the bowl and then backing away, dropping food, chewing on one side, excessive drooling, pawing at the mouth, bad breath, or reluctance to eat hard kibble. Do not assume a dog is simply “being picky” if it repeatedly tries and fails to eat.

2. Nausea or gastrointestinal upset
Nausea commonly reduces appetite. Dietary indiscretion, infection, inflammatory bowel disease, pancreatitis, and other digestive problems can all make food unappealing or painful.
Vomiting, regurgitation, diarrhea, abdominal discomfort, lip-licking, drooling, or repeated swallowing make a stomach or intestinal problem more likely. Ongoing vomiting or diarrhea can lead to dehydration and may require treatment.
3. A swallowed object or intestinal blockage
Toys, bones, socks, clothing, string, and other objects can become lodged in the digestive tract. A blockage may cause loss of appetite, vomiting, regurgitation, diarrhea, lethargy, abdominal pain, or shock.
String and other linear objects are particularly dangerous because they can cut or perforate the intestine. If you see string hanging from your dog’s mouth or anus, do not pull it. Contact a veterinarian immediately.
A suspected foreign-object ingestion is not a situation to monitor casually. An obstruction can compromise the intestine’s blood supply or cause perforation.

4. Illness affecting the whole body
Appetite loss can be an early sign of disease outside the digestive tract. Infections and disorders involving the kidneys, liver, heart, endocrine system, immune system, or respiratory system may reduce a dog’s desire to eat. Diabetes, kidney disease, Addison’s disease, respiratory disease, and cancer are among the possibilities.
There is no reliable way to identify the underlying illness from appetite loss alone. Increased thirst or urination, coughing, breathing changes, weight loss, fever, listlessness, or changes in bathroom habits make a veterinary examination more important.
5. Pain elsewhere in the body
Arthritis, an injury, back or neck disease, abdominal pain, and other painful conditions can suppress appetite. A dog with neck or back pain may also struggle to lower its head to a floor-level bowl.
Watch for restlessness, withdrawal, whining, an unusual posture, reluctance to move, limping, trembling, or difficulty getting comfortable. Avoid giving human painkillers; many are dangerous for dogs, even in small amounts.
6. Stress or a change in routine
Moving house, boarding, travel, a new pet or baby, separation from a family member, or the loss of an animal companion can temporarily affect appetite. Some dogs also eat less after a major change in their schedule or surroundings.

Stress is more plausible when your dog is otherwise bright, comfortable, drinking normally, and free of digestive or other symptoms. If appetite loss occurs with lethargy, pain, vomiting, diarrhea, or a noticeable behavior change, do not write it off as anxiety.
7. Food, smell, or environmental factors
Your dog may reject food that is spoiled, stale, unfamiliar, or simply unpalatable. A sudden food change can also upset the stomach. Because smell contributes strongly to food appeal, reduced ability to smell may make meals less interesting.
Heat and other environmental conditions can suppress appetite as well. Check the food’s freshness, confirm that it was stored properly, and make sure your dog has a quiet, comfortable place to eat. These simple checks are reasonable only if your dog otherwise seems well.
8. Medication side effects or poisoning
Some medications can cause nausea or reduce appetite. Poisoning may initially look like refusal of food, then progress to vomiting, diarrhea, drooling, weakness, abnormal behavior, pale gums, seizures, or collapse.
If your dog may have eaten a toxin, do not wait for symptoms to worsen. Save the product packaging if available and contact a veterinarian or an animal poison-control service. Do not induce vomiting unless a veterinary professional specifically tells you to; it can be unsafe with some substances and swallowed objects.

When is a dog not eating an emergency?
VCA Urgent Care recommends evaluation when a dog has not eaten for more than 12 hours. Contact a veterinarian promptly if your dog has diabetes and refuses even one meal.
Go to an emergency clinic immediately for any of the following:
- Repeated vomiting or repeated unproductive retching
- A swollen, tight, or distended abdomen
- Severe or obvious pain
- Weakness, collapse, or inability to stand normally
- Pale or white gums
- Difficulty breathing
- Seizures or marked abnormal behavior
- Blood in vomit or stool
- Suspected poisoning
- Possible ingestion of a toy, bone, string, sock, or other foreign object
Repeated attempts to vomit without producing anything, particularly alongside abdominal enlargement, may indicate gastric dilatation-volvulus (bloat). This is life-threatening and requires immediate treatment.

- Record the timeline. Note when your dog last ate normally and whether the refusal was sudden or gradual.
- Check for related symptoms. Monitor drinking, urination, bowel movements, vomiting, energy, breathing, posture, and signs of pain.
- Review recent exposure. Think about new foods, medications, household products, plants, trash, bones, toys, clothing, and other objects your dog could have reached.
- Look at the mouth only if it is safe. You may notice a damaged tooth or something obvious, but do not force the mouth open or reach inside a painful dog’s mouth.
- Call before trying home remedies. Your veterinarian can advise whether your dog needs an examination, testing, or emergency care.
Do not force food or water, give human medication, or attempt to make your dog vomit without specific veterinary instructions. Forced feeding can worsen some conditions, and vomiting is unsafe for certain poisons and objects.
Depending on the examination, a veterinarian may recommend blood tests, including a complete blood count, serum chemistry, and electrolytes. X-rays, ultrasound, endoscopy, or a biopsy may be needed when obstruction, organ disease, or another deeper problem is suspected.

What information should you give the veterinarian?
| Information | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| When your dog last ate and how much | Shows whether the problem is brief, persistent, or worsening |
| Water intake and urination | May point to dehydration, diabetes, kidney disease, or another systemic problem |
| Vomiting, diarrhea, or regurgitation | Helps distinguish digestive upset from other causes |
| Energy, posture, and movement | Can reveal pain or more serious illness |
| New foods, medicines, or supplements | May identify intolerance or a medication side effect |
| Access to toxins or objects | Changes the urgency and the recommended treatment |

Do not overlook pseudo-anorexia
If your dog is interested in food but cannot eat normally, the problem may be mechanical or painful rather than a loss of appetite. Dropping kibble, chewing only on one side, drooling, or repeatedly approaching the bowl can indicate a mouth, jaw, throat, or neck problem.
This pattern still needs veterinary attention. Switching to softer food may make eating easier temporarily, but it does not treat a painful tooth, oral injury, or other underlying condition.
FAQ
How long can a dog go without eating before seeing a vet?
Contact a veterinarian if your dog has gone more than 12 hours without eating; VCA Urgent Care recommends evaluation at that point. Seek help sooner if your dog has vomiting, diarrhea, pain, weakness, or other concerning signs. A diabetic dog that refuses even one meal should be discussed with a veterinarian promptly.
Should I force my dog to eat or drink?
No. Do not force food or water unless a veterinarian has specifically instructed you to do so. Forced feeding can worsen some conditions, and a dog that is vomiting or has an obstruction may need a different treatment plan.
What can I give my dog if it will not eat?
First look for warning signs and call your veterinarian if the refusal persists or your dog seems unwell. Avoid human medicines and do not make dietary changes or offer rich foods as a substitute for an examination when pain, vomiting, poisoning, or a swallowed object is possible.
Why does my dog go to the bowl but not eat?
That pattern may indicate pseudo-anorexia: your dog wants food but cannot pick it up, chew, or swallow comfortably. Dental disease, a broken tooth, mouth inflammation, jaw pain, or neck pain are possible causes and warrant a veterinary check.
The Bottom Line
A missed meal can result from stress, heat, an unappealing food, or a minor stomach upset—but refusal to eat can also be the first sign of pain, poisoning, organ disease, or an intestinal blockage. Note the timing and accompanying symptoms, avoid unsafe home treatments, and contact your veterinarian if the appetite loss lasts more than 12 hours or sooner if any emergency signs appear.
