The Best Friends Animal Society runs a webinar titled “Dog Reactivity Webinar” for shelter staff, volunteers and dog owners. It covers what reactivity is, why it shows up in shelters, how to manage it safely at home and in a shelter, and which training techniques may help. It promises no cure, and no single technique suits every dog.

Below you’ll find what that webinar covers, how it compares with other published options, and one practical exercise, the emergency U-turn, that you can start before any course.

What “reactivity” means here

These sources describe reactivity by what you can see, not by a diagnosis. Ottawa Humane Society puts it in owner terms: does your dog bark, lunge and pull on leash, or get worked up at the sight of new dogs, people or objects? The pages used for this article give no clinical definition or diagnostic standard. Treat “reactive” as a description of behavior around a trigger, not a label that explains the cause.

The Best Friends Animal Society webinar

  • Audience: shelter staff, volunteers and dog owners.
  • Topics: the nature of reactivity, why it appears in shelter settings, safe management at home and in shelters, and training techniques.
  • Related resources on the page: leash reactivity, muzzle training, positive reinforcement and shelter dog training.
  • Date: the page shows no publication date, so check how current it is when you watch.

Management sits next to training in this webinar’s goals. That matches how reactivity is usually handled: you reduce the dog’s exposure to triggers while you teach new responses.

How to choose

  • Check the audience. A home owner and a shelter volunteer need different things. Best Friends speaks to both.
  • Look for management and behavior change together. A course that offers only exercises, or only avoidance tips, is incomplete.
  • Look for safety coverage. This includes gear, distance and what to do if a dog gets too worked up.
  • Decide whether you need Q&A. Ottawa’s recordings leave the live Q&A out. If your dog’s case is unusual, a recording alone won’t answer your questions.
  • Know when a webinar isn’t enough. Ottawa lists when to seek professional help as a topic. If your dog’s reactions are intense, you can’t keep people or animals safe, or progress stalls, get individualized help from a qualified trainer or veterinary behavior professional.

Try one exercise now: the emergency U-turn

East Bay SPCA’s 2024 handout “Dog Reactivity Training: Emergency U-Turns” teaches a way to leave a trigger quickly. Its point: “The time to learn is not when you’re already in hot water.” This is one exercise from one handout. It isn’t a full protocol and it guarantees nothing.

  1. Pick a cue. Choose a consistent word such as “turn” or “let’s go.”
  2. Practice on leash somewhere neutral and controlled, with no triggers around.
  3. Lure the dog around in a U-turn with a reward.
  4. Mark and reward when the dog catches up with you.
  5. Build across contexts. Practice in more places before you use it near triggers.

The handout says to train at home first and to use management strategies in the meantime. Don’t count on the cue until it’s solid. Rewards should suit your dog: the handout lists lunch meat, hot dog, cheese or a favorite toy as high-value options. If your dog values a toy more than food, use the toy.

What these sources don’t give you

None of the pages used here offer prevalence figures or success rates, so treat any statistic you see attached to “reactive dogs” with caution unless it names its source. A webinar can give you a framework and vocabulary, such as thresholds and trigger stacking. Applying them to your own dog’s triggers is where a professional helps most.
