If your dog may have been stung by a scorpion, move the dog away from it, keep your dog calm, and call a veterinarian or emergency veterinary hospital for guidance. Wash the area and use a cloth-wrapped cold compress only for a localized reaction when your dog is otherwise normal. Breathing trouble, facial or tongue swelling, vomiting, excessive drooling, trouble swallowing, twitching, weakness, collapse, or worsening symptoms require immediate emergency care.

Do not handle a live scorpion, give human medication, cut or suck the wound, or delay professional advice while trying to identify the species. A veterinarian—not a home remedy—must determine whether your dog needs examination, monitoring, pain control, fluids, oxygen, or other treatment.

In the United States, most reported scorpion stings in dogs cause painful but localized problems such as pawing, limping, vocalizing, redness, swelling, itching, or tenderness. Skin damage and sloughing can occasionally develop. However, “usually localized” does not mean harmless.

The main U.S. exception is the Arizona bark scorpion (Centruroides sculpturatus). Its venom can cause whole-body effects in some animals, including excessive drooling, difficulty swallowing, abnormal breathing, high blood pressure, heart problems, tremors, and other neurologic signs. Severe cases can be life-threatening.
Risk depends on the scorpion species, the dog’s size and health, the sting location, the number of stings, and the individual dog’s response. A sting near the mouth or throat is especially concerning because swelling or impaired swallowing can interfere with breathing. You should not wait for species identification before calling a veterinarian.
What to do immediately
- Move your dog away from the scorpion. Protect yourself, children, and other pets first. Do not pick up, trap, or photograph a live scorpion. If you can obtain a photograph without approaching it or putting anyone at risk, you may show it to the veterinarian.
- Keep your dog quiet and calm. Limit running and excitement. Use a leash for a dog that can walk safely; carry a small dog if doing so does not increase stress or pain.
- Call a veterinarian promptly. Tell the clinic when the sting happened, where it occurred if known, your dog’s approximate weight, your location, and the symptoms you are seeing. Ask whether the dog should be examined immediately or monitored at home with specific instructions.
- Wash the area. Gently clean the suspected sting site with water. Do not scrub aggressively or try to squeeze the area.
- Use a cold compress for local swelling. Wrap a cold pack in cloth and apply it briefly, then remove it and check the skin. Never put ice directly on your dog’s skin, and do not use a compress if it makes your dog more distressed.
- Monitor continuously. A dog that initially has only paw pain can develop more serious signs. Keep the veterinarian’s number and the nearest emergency clinic available while you observe or travel.
Do not postpone veterinary care to complete first aid. These steps may provide limited comfort; they do not neutralize venom or prevent a severe reaction.

- Difficulty breathing, noisy breathing, or an unusual breathing effort
- Swelling of the face, muzzle, eyelids, lips, or tongue
- Hives or widespread raised swellings
- Repeated vomiting or diarrhea
- Excessive drooling, gagging, or trouble swallowing
- Twitching, tremors, seizures, severe agitation, or unusual neurologic behavior
- Marked weakness, inability to stand, disorientation, or collapse
- Signs of severe pain or a rapidly worsening condition
These symptoms may indicate systemic envenomation or a serious allergic reaction. Facial swelling, hives, and gastrointestinal signs after a known sting warrant urgent veterinary assessment; collapse or inability to stand is an emergency. If breathing is affected, do not wait to see whether the swelling improves.
Should you give Benadryl or another medicine?
Do not give Benadryl, another antihistamine, aspirin, ibuprofen, acetaminophen, steroids, sedatives, or pain medication unless a veterinarian has specifically recommended that drug and dose for your dog. Human products may contain ingredients that are dangerous to dogs, and the correct dose depends on the dog’s weight, health, other medicines, and the suspected reaction. Some liquid products also contain unsafe additives.
A veterinarian may prescribe pain relief and other supportive care for a localized sting. A dog with systemic toxicity may need hospitalization, intravenous fluids, oxygen, monitoring, and treatment directed at the specific signs. Antivenom is rarely used in veterinary medicine; severe cases are generally managed according to the dog’s clinical condition and how long ago the sting occurred.

Have these details ready:
- The approximate time of the sting
- The suspected location of the sting
- Whether more than one sting may have occurred
- Your dog’s weight, age, breed, and relevant medical conditions
- Current prescription and over-the-counter medications
- Every symptom you have noticed and whether it is improving or worsening
- Your geographic location, particularly if you live in an area where Arizona bark scorpions occur
- A photograph of the scorpion only if it was obtained safely
Do not risk another sting by trying to capture the scorpion. A description of the event and your location is more useful than an unsafe specimen.

What not to put on a scorpion sting
- Do not cut, burn, lance, squeeze, or suck the area.
- Do not try to draw out or “neutralize” venom.
- Do not apply essential oils, alcohol, pesticides, household chemicals, or unapproved creams.
- Do not put ice directly on the skin.
- Do not let your dog lick or chew the painful area if doing so worsens the irritation.
These actions can cause tissue damage, poisoning, infection, or additional stress without treating envenomation.
Build a dog emergency kit
A dog first aid kit can help with basic wound care and safe transport while you contact a veterinarian. Useful supplies include sterile gauze, non-stick pads, self-adhering bandage wrap, disposable gloves, saline, a reusable cold pack, a pet digital thermometer, an oral syringe, a leash, a flashlight, and a soft muzzle. Keep your regular veterinarian’s number, the nearest emergency clinic, and relevant poison-control contact information with the kit.
A first-aid kit cannot treat venom, stop anaphylaxis, or replace emergency veterinary care. Do not muzzle a dog that is vomiting or having trouble breathing, and never use a muzzle if it prevents the dog from panting normally. The kit is for limited first aid and preparation—not a substitute for professional assessment.

Preventing future scorpion encounters
Prevention depends on local scorpion species and living conditions. Supervise dogs outdoors where scorpions are active, inspect patios and outdoor resting areas, and reduce access to cracks, debris, wood piles, and other hiding places. Do not improvise with pesticides around pets. Any pest-control product should be selected and applied exactly according to its label and, when appropriate, with advice from a licensed pest professional and your veterinarian.

- Splinter Picker/Tick Remover: Safely remove splinters and ticks from your dog's paws and body
- Triangular Bandage: Safely administer first aid to your dog by first muzzling them with this triangular bandage
- Cohesive Elastic Bandage: Easily wrap injuries with this self-adhering bandage which doesn't stick to fur
Keep dogs away from treated surfaces until the product label says they are safe to re-enter. If you find a scorpion indoors, protect people and pets rather than attempting a risky capture.

A serious sting can require emergency examination or hospitalization. As a general preparedness issue, some U.S. pet owners compare pet insurance for emergency vet bills, including accident-only and accident-and-illness policies. Reimbursement depends on the policy’s deductible, reimbursement percentage, annual limit, covered services, exclusions, and other terms.
Insurance is not a guaranteed way to pay for the current sting. Waiting periods and pre-existing-condition exclusions may apply, and eligibility and availability vary by provider and location. Check the current policy documents before enrolling and confirm how claims are handled.
What recovery may look like
A dog with a localized reaction may remain painful, lick or paw at the site, limp, or have mild swelling and redness. Follow the veterinarian’s instructions, prevent excessive licking, and report worsening pain, spreading swelling, skin discoloration, or any new whole-body symptom.

Do not assume that a quiet dog is recovering if it is weak, unusually sleepy, breathing abnormally, or difficult to rouse. When in doubt, call the veterinary hospital again. Early changes are easier for a veterinary team to assess than a crisis after symptoms have progressed.
Frequently Asked Questions
What are the signs of a scorpion sting in a dog?
Usually, a dog has pain, pawing, limping, vocalization, redness, swelling, itching, or tenderness at the sting site. Some dogs develop skin damage or sloughing. Whole-body signs such as vomiting, drooling, abnormal breathing, tremors, weakness, or collapse are more serious.
When should I take my dog to the emergency vet after a scorpion sting?
Call your veterinarian promptly. If your dog has breathing trouble, facial or tongue swelling, repeated vomiting, excessive drooling, trouble swallowing, twitching, tremors, weakness, collapse, or rapidly worsening symptoms, go directly to an emergency veterinary hospital.
Can I give my dog Benadryl after a scorpion sting?
No. Do not give Benadryl or any other antihistamine, pain reliever, steroid, sedative, or human medicine unless a veterinarian gives you the specific product and dose for your dog.
What can I put on my dog’s scorpion sting?
Wash the area gently and use a cold compress wrapped in cloth for brief periods if the reaction is localized and your dog is otherwise normal. Do not cut, squeeze, burn, suck, or apply essential oils, alcohol, pesticides, or other unapproved substances.
The Bottom Line
Most U.S. scorpion stings in dogs cause painful local symptoms, but Arizona bark scorpions can occasionally cause serious whole-body effects. Keep your dog calm, wash the area, use a cloth-wrapped cold compress for localized swelling, and contact a veterinarian. Breathing trouble, facial or tongue swelling, vomiting, drooling, trouble swallowing, twitching, weakness, collapse, or worsening symptoms require immediate emergency veterinary care.
