Lakeville police responded to repeated 911 hang-up calls from a home where the owner was away and found two excited dogs. FOX 9 reported that dispatch logged 16 calls, but the report did not establish that they happened within 30 minutes—or prove that the dogs made them. An officer said a paw might have pressed the owner’s phone; that remained a theory, not a confirmed explanation.
Why police went to a home with two dogs
On February 21, 2019, FOX 9 reported that Lakeville, Minnesota, officers Michelle Roberts and Emily Bares were sent to a home after a 911 hang-up call. Dispatch later told them additional calls were coming from the same address, with dogs barking audible in the background. The calls continued 16 times, according to the report.

At the house, the officers encountered two dogs: Remy, a Papillon, and Bomber, a hound. The owner was not home. His cell phone was on a desk and set to “emergency call only,” FOX 9 reported. The repeated calls and the barking led officers to check the address; the dispatch was routine work, even if the scene they found was not.
Could a dog really call 911?
Officer Roberts told FOX 9 that, “so in theory a dog could’ve called 911, and pushed the phone with its paw.” She described the officers’ explanation as an assumption: “Our assumption is the dogs were having a rough day and it was the dogs that were seeking assistance through 911.”

That is a plausible explanation, not a verified reconstruction. The report does not establish which dog, if either, touched the phone, how the calls were triggered, or exactly when they occurred. It also does not identify the phone model. The headline’s claim that the calls came in 30 minutes is not confirmed by the cited reporting.
The officers found humor in an unusual call
The contrast between repeated hang-ups and two dogs at home gave the response its comic turn. Roberts told FOX 9, “Anytime we can laugh and talk about dogs calling 911, if that’s the biggest news of our day that’s a good day.” The owner told the station he was stunned and would not leave his phone out again. FOX 9 did not report what he later did with it.

What to do after an accidental 911 call
Lakeville Police Department’s FAQ advises people who dial 911 accidentally to stay on the line and tell the dispatcher what happened. It says a hang-up without speaking will most likely prompt an officer to be sent. That is Lakeville’s local guidance; procedures can vary elsewhere, so follow the dispatcher’s instructions.
If a call is accidental, do not assume that hanging up cancels it. Speak to the dispatcher, explain that there is no emergency, and answer any questions. If you discover a phone is making repeated emergency calls, keep it under your control and tell the dispatcher what you know about the situation.
