In Trafalgar Square, pigeons can look like an invitation to stop for a photo—or to share a snack. Don’t assume feeding them is allowed: check the current rules for the site you’re visiting, and leave the birds, monuments and other visitors undisturbed.
Why did feeding pigeons become a Trafalgar Square tradition?

Pigeons can make use of food and water in busy urban settings. The cited account describes them as able to drink quickly by “suck[ing]” up puddle water and to store food in a crop. Those adaptations help explain how pigeons exploit city environments; they are not a reason to feed them.

What do pigeons mean for monuments and public spaces?
Pigeon droppings soil buildings and can damage stonework, while cleaning them creates recurring maintenance work. An essay excerpt cites a “Proposed” reference for an estimate that cleaning pigeon droppings in Trafalgar Square costs the city of London $150,000 a year. The excerpt does not give the underlying report’s publication year or explain how the estimate was calculated, so treat it as a reported figure rather than a current, independently verified budget.
The practical trade-off is clear: feeding may make a wildlife encounter more memorable, but it can also add to hygiene and crowd-management concerns and the burden of preserving historic stonework.

- Check the site’s current rule. Do not treat a historical debate as today’s law; follow posted instructions and current byelaws.
- Keep food to yourself unless feeding is explicitly allowed. Do not encourage birds to gather around people or busy walkways.
