The Halloween hazards that send pets to the veterinarian are predictable: chocolate and sugar-free candy, small costume parts and candy wrappers that can be swallowed, lit decorations and electrical cords, and open doors during trick-or-treating. Keep all of these out of reach, and if a dog or cat eats something it should not have, contact a veterinarian or the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center at (888) 426-4435 immediately rather than waiting to see whether symptoms appear.
This guide draws on the ASPCA’s Halloween guidance, including its article “Don’t Get Tricked by These Pet Hazards This Halloween,” published October 21, 2025, along with veterinary-school advice from Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine and seasonal guidance from Pet Poison Helpline. The hotline and organizations cited are US services, so the emergency contact details apply in the United States. Advice on costumes, visitors and food applies wherever you live.
Candy and food: the most serious hazard
Candy is the hazard with the highest potential for serious harm, and it is also the easiest to control. The key is to treat any candy bag, bowl or trick-or-treat basket as unsafe whenever it is within a pet’s reach, including when you leave the room for a moment.
Chocolate
The ASPCA warns that chocolate can be dangerous to both cats and dogs, and it singles out dark and baking chocolate as the most concerning types. Because the risk depends on the type of chocolate, the amount eaten and the animal involved, you should not try to estimate whether a particular piece is “enough to matter.” Any chocolate that a pet has eaten is a reason to call a professional.

Xylitol and sugar-free candy
Sugar-free candies and gum may contain xylitol, which the ASPCA says can be life-threatening to dogs. Check the ingredient list of any sugar-free treat before it goes into a bowl, and do not assume a product is safe because it is labelled “sugar-free.” The sources reviewed for this article describe xylitol as a dog-specific emergency; they do not establish the same risk profile for cats, so treat any xylitol exposure in a cat as a reason to call for advice.
Other foods to restrict
Cornell University’s Halloween guidance lists several additional foods to keep away from pets: caffeine, macadamia nuts, grapes, raisins, and foods containing cannabinoids. Pet Poison Helpline’s seasonal guidance names chocolate, candy overindulgence, raisins and candy wrappers as common Halloween food-related problems. Those sources do not give species-specific thresholds for these foods, so the safe response is the same: keep them secured and call a professional if a pet eats one.

How common are chocolate exposures?
The ASPCA’s 2025 toxin summary (published by ASPCApro) reports that 13.6% of exposures handled by ASPCA Poison Control were attributed to chocolate, placing it fourth among the toxin categories listed. That figure covers exposures across the year, not Halloween alone. It describes the caseload of a poison-control service, not how often a given pet will eat chocolate, so it should be read as evidence that chocolate is a frequent problem rather than as a seasonal rate.
Costumes and small accessories
A costume is optional, and comfort comes first. ASPCA guidance says a costume should not restrict a pet’s movement, sight or breathing, and should not stop it from barking or meowing. Look for dangling strings, bells, buttons, ribbons and other chewable pieces that could be pulled off and swallowed or cause choking.

The ASPCA’s 2025 article advises against dressing a pet unless you know it enjoys wearing clothing, and it specifically advises against headpieces. If a pet looks anxious, stops moving normally or tries repeatedly to pull the costume off, remove it and skip dressing up that year. Cornell notes that easily pulled-off accessories may be swallowed and cause a gastrointestinal foreign-body obstruction, which can require veterinary care. Small toys, plastic eyes and similar parts belong in the same category and should be kept away from pets along with the candy.
Decorations, candles and cords
Decorations create a different set of risks. The ASPCA warns that pets can knock over lit jack-o’-lanterns, which creates a fire risk. Its historical guidance also describes the dangers of candle flames, chewed electrical cords, and foil or cellophane wrappers, which may cause gastrointestinal problems or obstruction. Use battery-operated lights where you can, run cords out of reach, and place decorations where a tail or a curious cat cannot knock them over. Treat the older ASPCA press material as supporting background, and rely on the current 2025 article for the core recommendations.

Visitors, open doors and outdoor walks
Managing the doorway
A steady stream of visitors and an open front door can frighten a pet or give it a chance to slip outside. The ASPCA recommends moving less-social dogs and cats to a quiet, comfortable room away from the front door during peak trick-or-treating hours. A closed bedroom with water, a bed and a familiar toy is usually enough. A pet gate can help in some layouts by creating a barrier near the entry, but ASPCA guidance does not specifically prescribe a gate, so treat it as an optional household aid rather than an official recommendation.
Walks after dark
If you take a dog out after dark, use a secure leash, a reflective collar and proper identification. A reflective collar improves visibility to drivers and other people, but it does not stop a dog from pulling free and it does not replace a leash. Identification should be attached and legible, and it should be current. The sources reviewed do not name a particular product or brand, so choose equipment that fits your pet and checks the boxes below.

If your pet eats something it should not have
-
Remove the pet from the source and secure what is left. Move the animal away from the candy, wrappers or decorations and place the remaining items in a closed cabinet.
-
Call a professional right away. Contact your veterinarian or the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center at (888) 426-4435. Do not wait for symptoms, because the safe response depends on the substance, the amount, the animal and the timing.
-
Gather the details before you call. Have the packaging or ingredient list, an estimate of how much was eaten, the time it happened, and your pet’s species, age and approximate weight available.
-
Follow the professional’s instructions. Do not try home remedies or rely on reassurance that the amount was small. Take the pet in or follow the advice you receive.

Before Halloween night
- Move all candy, including sugar-free and wrapped treats, to a secured cabinet.

- Inspect any costume for dangling, chewable or easily removed parts, and skip it if your pet is distressed.
- Keep lit decorations, candles and cords out of reach.
- Plan a quiet room away from the front door for less-social pets during peak trick-or-treating hours.
- Confirm that your pet’s identification is attached and legible, and that the phone number for your veterinarian and the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center at (888) 426-4435 is saved where everyone in the household can reach it.
The ASPCA’s 2025 article puts the central message plainly: “Prevention is key in keeping your furry friends safe this spooky season, so make sure you are prepared for whatever activities are in store.” An older ASPCA press release from 2010 made a similar point in the words of Mindy Bough, then Vice President of the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center: “Many of our favorite Halloween traditions could pose a potential threat to our companion animals.”
