Doorbell training teaches a dog to signal that it wants access to the outdoors, while place training teaches the dog to go to a bed, crate, or mat and remain there until released. Choose the bell or button for a clearer potty signal, place training for settling and visitor management, or teach both as separate behaviors when you need both outcomes.
These skills solve different problems, so a head-to-head winner would be misleading. The available training guidance does not establish that either method is faster or has a higher success rate for every dog. Your dog’s goal, temperament, household routine, and ability to learn in small steps should determine the starting point.

What doorbell training and place training actually teach
The word “training” covers two very different behaviors here. A signal at the door is a communication system: the dog performs a behavior that you have paired with an outdoor trip. A place cue is a stationing behavior: the dog moves to a defined location, settles, and waits for a release cue.
Doorbell or button signaling
In the signaling sequence described by the American Kennel Club (AKC), you introduce a hanging bell, a button, or another communication device gently; install it beside the door used for potty trips; touch, ring, or press it whenever you take the dog out; and respond promptly when the dog later produces the signal independently. The sound or button press predicts access to the outside.

The device is not a complete housetraining program. A puppy or newly adopted dog still needs a predictable outing schedule, close supervision, and immediate reinforcement for eliminating outdoors. The signal cannot tell you whether the dog actually emptied its bladder or bowel, and it cannot reliably distinguish a potty need from a request to go out for play, a walk, or investigation.
Place, mat, bed, or crate training
Place training gives the dog a physical target and a job. The target can be a mat, bed, crate, or portable station. You reinforce attention to the target, then stepping onto it, all four paws on it, a down, and gradually longer periods of calm behavior. A release cue tells the dog when the exercise is over.
The skill is useful when you need the dog away from a doorway, settled while you cook or work, or positioned during a visitor’s arrival. A portable mat can help you practice the same behavior in another room or away from home. The cue should be added after the dog understands the behavior, rather than being repeated while the dog is still guessing what “place” means.

| Primary goal | Best starting skill | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| A clear way to ask for an outdoor trip | Doorbell or button signaling | The signal is deliberately paired with opening the door and going outside. Keep the ordinary housetraining schedule in place. |
| Less barking, jumping, or crowding when visitors arrive | Place training | A station gives the dog an alternative location and behavior to perform instead of rushing the entry. |
| Calm behavior around the doorbell sound | Controlled sound practice plus place training | Pair a low-intensity doorbell sound with valuable treats so the dog turns toward you, then send the dog to its station. |
| Reliable potty communication and a calmer greeting routine | Teach both, as separate behaviors | The behaviors have different cues, locations, and consequences; learning one does not prevent learning the other. |
| A dog frightened by bells, visitors, or the doorway | Modify the environment and seek behavior guidance | Forcing contact or repeatedly exposing the dog to an upsetting trigger can increase fear. Start below the dog’s reaction threshold. |
This is a goal-based decision, not a claim that one technique wins in a controlled comparison. The guidance available for these methods does not provide a universal success-rate statistic.

How to teach a dog to use a doorbell or button for potty trips
Use the door the dog normally uses for toileting. Keep the training device at a height the dog can reach without jumping, and make sure it cannot create a snagging or chewing hazard.
- Introduce the device calmly. Let the dog look at and sniff a hanging bell or button. Reward relaxed interest with a small treat. If the sound worries the dog, muffle it, increase distance, or switch to a quieter device. Do not push the dog’s nose or paw into the device.
- Place it beside the potty door. Use the same door for the early repetitions. A consistent location helps the dog connect the device with the next step.
- Pair the signal with every scheduled trip. Before opening the door, ring the bell or press the button yourself, then go outside immediately. Keep the sequence boring and predictable at first: signal, door, potty area.
- Reinforce outdoor elimination. When the dog finishes eliminating outdoors, praise promptly and provide the food reward recommended in your normal housetraining plan. The reward should follow the desired elimination, not merely the sound of the bell.
- Respond to independent signals. When the dog rings or presses without your help, acknowledge it and take the dog out promptly. Early, consistent responses teach that the signal has a reliable meaning.
- Keep outings purposeful. Give the dog enough time to eliminate, then return or transition to the planned walk or play. If every signal produces an exciting adventure, some dogs may use the device to request entertainment rather than toileting.
- Continue the schedule and supervision. Young, recently adopted, or unreliable dogs still need regular trips, observation for sniffing or circling, and prevention of indoor accidents. Do not wait for a signal that the dog has not yet learned to give consistently.
What a successful signal looks like
The dog approaches the device, rings or presses it, and you can identify the behavior without prompting. Reliability means the dog can perform it in the normal part of the home and that you respond consistently; it does not mean every signal is proof of an urgent bladder need.
Common bell-training mistakes
- Using the device only after accidents. The association is built through repeated, planned trips, not emergency reactions.
- Ignoring signals during busy periods. If the sound sometimes works and sometimes does not, the dog may abandon it or escalate to barking and scratching.
- Replacing supervision too early. A bell is a communication aid, not a guarantee that a puppy can hold it or will use the device for every trip.
- Allowing unlimited access to outdoor fun. Keep potty trips and recreational outings distinct enough that the signal retains a predictable meaning.
- Forcing a worried dog to touch a loud bell. Use a quieter button, more distance, or professional help for fear around the sound.
How to teach a reliable place behavior
Choose a mat or bed that is large enough for the dog to lie down comfortably but easy for you to identify as a station. Begin in a quiet room with small treats and, if you like, a clicker. A clicker is optional; the timing of the reward matters more than the tool.
- Reward attention to the station. Look for the dog glancing at, sniffing, or approaching the mat. Mark that moment with a click or a brief verbal marker and deliver the treat on the mat.
- Build to all four paws. Reward one paw, then two, and eventually all four paws on the surface. If the dog steps off, simply wait for another opportunity; do not drag it back.
- Deliver rewards on the mat. Feeding on the target helps the dog understand that the station itself is valuable. Keep your hand low so the dog does not have to leave the mat to collect the treat.
- Add a release cue. Say a consistent word such as “free” or “okay,” then invite the dog away and reward the release if needed. The dog should learn that remaining is different from being finished.
- Shape a down. Once the dog readily goes to the mat, reward a sit or down there. Do not demand a down before the dog understands the station; build one component at a time.
- Increase duration gradually. Start with brief intervals, reward calm staying, and release before the dog gets up. Extend the interval in small increments rather than testing the maximum every repetition.
- Add distance separately. Take one step away, return, and reward. Increase distance only when the dog can remain relaxed at the current level.
- Add distractions separately. Practice a quiet movement, a household sound, or a person walking past. If the dog leaves, reduce the intensity or duration and reward an easier repetition.
- Add the verbal cue after the behavior is understood. Say “mat,” “place,” or another chosen cue just before the dog moves to the station. Avoid repeating the cue while the dog is confused.
- Generalize the behavior. Practice in other rooms, then with a portable mat in suitable locations outside the home. Lower the difficulty whenever the new environment causes mistakes.
Using place training for arrivals
Rehearse without a real guest first. Send the dog to the mat, reward staying, and release it before frustration builds. Then add a quiet knock or doorbell sound at a level the dog can handle. Reward the dog for orienting toward you and remaining on the station. Increase the realism one element at a time: sound, person approaching, door movement, and finally a guest entering.

Arizona Humane Society guidance recommends pairing a controlled doorbell sound with high-value treats so the dog begins turning toward the handler. That exercise is counterconditioning, not a command to endure a frightening noise. If the dog is barking intensely, lunging, hiding, or unable to eat, make the sound softer or farther away and obtain qualified behavior help rather than repeatedly ringing the bell.
Can you teach both skills?
Yes. Give each behavior a distinct cue and outcome. The bell or button means “I am asking for outdoor access.” The place cue means “move to this station and remain until released.” Teaching them separately prevents a dog from confusing a request to go outside with a requirement to stay indoors on a mat.
A practical order for a household that needs both
- Stabilize the potty routine. Use regular outings, supervision, and outdoor reinforcement while introducing the signal at the door.
- Build a quiet station away from the doorway. Teach mat skills in a low-distraction room before practicing with visitors.
- Practice the door sequence. Have a helper produce a mild doorbell sound, reward the dog’s orientation to you, and cue the mat. Keep the potty device out of this rehearsal unless the dog is actually going outside.
- Separate real requests from rehearsals. When the dog independently signals for the outdoors, take it out. During arrival practice, use the place cue and release the dog according to the exercise plan.
- Increase difficulty one variable at a time. Change distance, duration, sound intensity, number of people, or location separately. Return to an easier level after a failure.
Troubleshooting by symptom
The dog rings constantly
First check whether the dog may genuinely need more frequent opportunities, especially if it is young, ill, recently adopted, or has had a schedule change. If outdoor trips are consistently uneventful and the dog is seeking play, keep potty trips calm and brief, then provide planned exercise and enrichment separately. Do not punish the signal; doing so can suppress the very communication you want.

The dog rings but does not eliminate
Take the dog to the usual potty area and wait quietly. A signal means a request for outdoor access, not proof of elimination. Maintain the schedule and reward elimination when it occurs. If the pattern is sudden or accompanied by straining, increased drinking, diarrhea, pain, or frequent accidents, contact a veterinarian.

The dog ignores the bell
Return to gentle investigation and reward any calm interaction. Check that the device is visible, reachable, and not startling. Pair your own signal with every planned outing for a period of consistent repetitions. A button may suit a dog that dislikes a jingling sound, while a hanging bell may be easier for a dog that naturally noses objects.
The dog leaves the mat immediately
You have probably increased duration, distance, or distraction too quickly. Shorten the interval, reward sooner, and release before the dog chooses to leave. Then build only one dimension at a time. Keep rewards on the mat and make the release cue clear.
The dog can stay on the mat only when you stand nearby
Work on distance as its own exercise. Take a small step away, return, and reward; repeat until that step is easy before adding another. Do not add a visitor, food preparation, and a longer duration in the same session.

Indoor accidents continue
Increase supervision and return to a predictable outing schedule. American Humane Society guidance recommends immediate praise and treats when outdoor elimination is complete. Its July 8, 2022 housetraining guidance also advises veterinary or animal-behavior assistance when accidents begin suddenly or housetraining is unsuccessful, because a medical condition may be involved.
Use reward-based methods
The American Veterinary Society of Animal Behavior (AVSAB) identifies its 2021 Humane Dog Training position statement as its current authoritative position and added a board clarification in 2025. The organization’s public statement says: “Based on current scientific evidence, AVSAB recommends that only reward-based training methods be used for all dog training, including the treatment of behavior problems.”
For these exercises, reward-based training means arranging an achievable step, marking the behavior you want, and delivering something the dog values. It also means managing the environment so the dog is not repeatedly rehearsing barking, rushing the door, or having accidents. Avoid leash corrections, intimidation, shock, or forcing contact with a bell or station. A qualified professional can help design a gradual plan for fear, aggression, severe reactivity, or persistent housetraining problems.

When to involve a veterinarian or behavior professional
- House-soiling starts suddenly after a previously reliable period.
- The dog strains, urinates unusually often, drinks much more, shows pain, or has gastrointestinal symptoms.
- The dog cannot remain under threshold around the doorbell, visitors, or the station even at very low intensity.
- The dog displays lunging, snapping, biting, panic, or destructive escape behavior.
- Several weeks of consistent scheduling, supervision, and reward-based practice produce no meaningful progress.
A veterinarian can investigate medical contributors to elimination changes. For behavior problems, ask for a professional who uses reward-based methods and can explain the plan, criteria for increasing difficulty, and safety steps.
Quick Recap
A simple decision checklist
- Need communication about going outside? Start with a bell or button paired with the normal potty routine.
- Need calm settling, safer greetings, or a dog who can stay out of the kitchen? Start with place training.
- Need both? Teach the behaviors separately, then rehearse them around the doorway with controlled sound and gradual rewards.
- Dog worried by the sound or unable to eat? Reduce intensity and seek behavior guidance rather than forcing exposure.
- Accidents are sudden or persistent? Keep training humane and arrange veterinary or qualified behavior support.
