Could your cat’s symptoms be ear mites?
Ear mites are one possible cause of persistent itching, head shaking, ear inflammation, and dark, waxy debris. Those signs do not confirm mites: other ear problems can look much the same. A veterinarian can inspect the ear canal with an otoscope and examine collected debris under a microscope. Cornell’s Feline Health Center and VCA describe these diagnostic approaches.

Getting the cause right matters because an inflamed or infected ear may need care beyond mite treatment. VCA notes that secondary yeast or bacterial infections can also require treatment. Avoid putting a household substance into an irritated ear while you wait for veterinary advice.

Are natural home remedies a proven cure?
The available veterinary guidance does not establish five safe, reliable natural cures. Cornell recounts baby oil as an “old-time remedy,” quoting veterinarian William Miller Jr. Its page describes drops used several times daily for about a month, but this historical anecdote is not a general recommendation for unsupervised treatment. It appears alongside Cornell’s advice to seek veterinary assessment and to follow proper instruction for home care.

Hydrogen peroxide and vinegar are not safe substitutes: Merck Veterinary Manual’s cat-owner guidance, reviewed in February 2026, warns that they can irritate inflamed ear canals and increase secretions. Use only ear products and cleaning methods recommended by your veterinarian.
What should you do if you suspect ear mites?
- Arrange a veterinary assessment. Describe the signs you have noticed and when they began. Ask the clinic how soon your cat should be seen, especially if the ear is painful or symptoms are worsening.
- Do not start a home remedy or clean deep inside the ear. Until you have instructions, avoid baby oil, peroxide, vinegar, and unapproved ear products. The appearance of debris alone cannot establish the diagnosis.
- Follow the prescribed treatment and cleaning plan. Merck’s cat mite guidance, updated in June 2026, says treatment uses a suitable antiparasitic medication or whole-body treatment plan, with ear-cleaning instructions from the veterinarian. Cornell notes that veterinarians have topical, oral, and systemic options; which is appropriate depends on the individual cat.
- Ask about infection, inflammation, and follow-up. If another problem is present as well, it may need separate care. Have the veterinarian explain how to give any medication, how and when to clean the ears, and whether a recheck is needed.
Do other pets in the household need treatment?
Ear mites can spread through close contact. Tell the veterinarian about every cat and dog that has been in contact with the affected pet, and ask whether each needs examination or treatment. Merck advises treating contact animals and cleaning bedding, brushes, and household items; follow the veterinarian’s directions for what to clean and how.

When is it risky to wait?
Persistent scratching can injure the ears. Cornell warns that untreated outer-ear disease may progress and, if severe, affect hearing or balance. Seek veterinary advice promptly when you suspect mites rather than waiting to see whether a household remedy works. If your cat appears to have trouble with balance or hearing, contact a veterinarian urgently.
