- Warning Shark Sighted Enter at Your Own Risk
Group member Deane Barker told the paper the February encounter had “put shivers through the group”; “a few of the guys refuse to get back in (the river).” Some members continued river swimming “in a different format much closer to shore.” Barker also said the ocean felt like a bigger body of water and made some swimmers feel safer.
Those are descriptions of the group’s feelings and decisions, not official safety advice or evidence that one swimming location is categorically safer. Are there sharks in the Swan River?
The February 2025 incident and a later official warning show that bull shark activity has been reported in the lower Swan River. On 24 February 2026, SharkSmart reported repeated detections of a tagged bull shark at East Fremantle and Blackwall Reach receivers over the preceding three days. It advised extra caution in the lower river from Melville Waters to Fremantle, checking current alerts and following closures. DPIRD and partner agencies said they would continue monitoring.
That 2026 notice is dated information, not confirmation of an active warning on 4 October 2026. Shark alerts can change, so a past report should not be treated as a live status or as a measure of an individual swimmer’s risk.
