Freeze them in small portions, check every packaged ingredient for xylitol and other hazards, and offer treats in moderation. These recipes are snacks—not complete meals—and dogs with medical conditions may need a veterinarian’s advice before trying them.
Choose a recipe that fits your dog
The easiest option is a small cube of dog-safe broth. If your dog tolerates dairy, plain yogurt can be blended with fruit or pumpkin for a creamier treat. A hollow stuffable toy can turn a suitable mixture into a longer-lasting activity; a tray or small mold makes portioning easier. Choose the ingredients and serving style based on your dog’s known sensitivities and how they chew.

All of the recipes below are treats, not balanced meals. Treat calories count toward a dog’s daily intake, so keep portions modest and adjust the rest of the day’s food as needed. 1. Frozen broth cubes
For a quick, dairy-free option, use a dog-safe, no-salt-added chicken or beef broth. Check its ingredient label before using it: broth can contain ingredients that are not appropriate for dogs, including onion or garlic. VCA lists onions and garlic among household food hazards for dogs: Toxic Household Hazards for Dogs.

Use molds that make pieces suitable for your dog’s size and chewing style. If you are not sure whether a particular broth or treat is suitable, skip it and use a simple ingredient you already know your dog can eat.
2. Frozen watermelon or cantaloupe bites
Watermelon and cantaloupe can be served as frozen fruit bites when prepared carefully. Remove the rind and seeds, then cut the fruit into bite-sized pieces before freezing. Small pieces are easier to portion than a large frozen block.
- Remove all rind and seeds from the fruit.
- Cut the fruit into pieces sized for your dog.
- Arrange the pieces in a single layer on a tray or place them in a suitable mold, then freeze.
- Offer a modest amount in a bowl or as an addition to a hollow stuffable toy.
The fruit pieces can also be blended into a yogurt treat. For that version, blend about two cups of frozen fruit with roughly a quarter cup of plain yogurt, adjusting the texture as desired. These are approximate recipe quantities, not a feeding allowance: serve only a small portion appropriate to your dog.
3. Banana smoothie pops
For a soft, blendable mixture, combine frozen banana with a little plain yogurt. Strawberries, blueberries, or pumpkin puree can be added as mix-ins. The exact amount of each addition is not specified in the recipe guidance, so use a modest amount and keep the mixture simple.

- Blend frozen banana with a little plain yogurt until the mixture is smooth enough to spoon or pour.
- Add a small amount of a dog-safe mix-in, such as strawberries, blueberries, or pumpkin puree, if desired.
- Divide the mixture among small molds or paper cups.
- Freeze until solid. Remove any paper cup before serving.
Do not use wooden sticks. A stick can create a choking or injury risk, so serve the frozen treat without one. If you do not have small molds, use a tray or another suitable container that lets you control the serving size.
4. Two-ingredient frozen pumpkin bites
The American Kennel Club’s pumpkin recipe combines one cup of plain yogurt with one cup of canned pumpkin puree. Choose plain pumpkin puree rather than a prepared pie filling, and check the packaging so you know what is in it.
- Mix one cup of plain yogurt with one cup of canned pumpkin puree.
- Divide the mixture among an ice tray or small molds.
- Freeze until firm, then serve a modest portion.
This recipe still contains dairy, so it is not a good fit for every dog. If your dog does not tolerate yogurt, choose a different recipe rather than assuming this mixture will be suitable. See the AKC’s pumpkin treat recipes for the recipe basis.
How to prepare and serve frozen treats
Check ingredients before mixing
Read labels on packaged yogurt, peanut butter, broth, and any other ingredient. Avoid xylitol, which VCA identifies as toxic to dogs. Also keep chocolate, macadamia nuts, grapes and raisins, onions, and garlic out of dog treats. VCA’s list of household food hazards covers these and other risks.

Do not rely on a product’s general description or flavor to decide whether it is safe; check the ingredient list. If a label is unclear, use another ingredient with a clear label or leave that ingredient out. This matters especially for packaged products such as broth, which can include more than the expected base ingredients.
Size portions for the individual dog
Use an ice tray, small mold, or small pieces of prepared fruit to make portions manageable. A piece that is easy for one dog to chew may be too large or awkward for another. There is no single portion size in these recipes that fits every dog; base the amount on your dog’s size, eating habits, and dietary needs.
Offer a small amount at first when introducing a new ingredient. Fruit, yogurt, and peanut butter all contribute calories, and a frozen snack still counts as food. Keep the overall amount modest and account for the treat in the dog’s daily calories rather than adding it on top without adjustment.

Use a toy only when the dog can handle it
A hollow rubber dog toy can be filled with a dog-safe mixture and frozen for a longer-lasting activity. This can be useful when you want the dog to work at a treat rather than eat a small cube quickly. Choose a toy that is appropriate for the dog and supervise the activity, particularly if you are unsure how the dog chews or interacts with it. A tray-frozen bite is the simpler choice when enrichment is not suitable.

Which base should you use?
| Base | What it works well for | What to consider |
|---|---|---|
| No-salt-added broth | Simple frozen cubes; a dairy-free recipe idea | Check the label for xylitol, onion, garlic, and other unsuitable ingredients. |
| Plain yogurt | Blended fruit treats, banana pops, or pumpkin bites | Some dogs do not tolerate dairy. Start with a small amount or choose another base if dairy causes digestive upset. |
| Fruit | Frozen watermelon or cantaloupe pieces, or a blended fruit mixture | Remove rind and seeds from watermelon or cantaloupe, cut into suitable pieces, and count the calories. |
| Canned pumpkin puree | A pumpkin-and-yogurt mixture or a modest mix-in | Check the product label and remember that the cited two-ingredient recipe includes yogurt. |
There is no universally best base. A dog that has trouble with dairy may do better with a non-dairy option, while a dog with a diagnosed condition may need a diet-specific decision rather than a general recipe choice.

Your dog develops digestive upset after a yogurt treat
Some dogs do not tolerate dairy and may develop digestive upset. Stop offering that yogurt-based treat and choose another option, such as a simple broth cube if the broth’s ingredients are suitable. Do not assume that a different yogurt recipe will avoid the same issue simply because it includes fruit or pumpkin.

You cannot verify a packaged ingredient
Leave it out. In particular, do not use a product if you cannot establish whether it contains xylitol. Choose a clearly labeled alternative instead of trying to estimate safety from the product name or flavor.

The frozen piece seems too large or hard for your dog to manage
Make smaller portions with a tray or mold, or let a piece soften enough to be manageable before offering it. Avoid wooden sticks and remove paper cups. Choose a serving method that suits your dog’s chewing habits rather than assuming every dog should receive the same style of frozen treat.
Your dog has a medical condition or a restricted diet
Ask your veterinarian before adding treats if a diagnosed condition affects what your dog can eat. VCA cautions that some treats may not be suitable for dogs with medical conditions; its discussion of diet considerations is available in Vegetarian Diets for Dogs. The relevant question is whether the ingredients and calories fit your dog’s individual plan, not whether a recipe is generally popular.
Keep frozen treats in perspective
Frozen snacks can make a warm-day treat or a short enrichment activity, but they do not replace fresh water, exercise, or a complete diet. AKC Chief Veterinarian Jerry Klein advises enjoying summer activity with dogs while providing plenty of fresh, clean water for hydration in Vet-Approved Frozen Summer Treats for Dogs. A small, suitable treat is an extra—not a substitute for those basics.
