The elusive creature recorded on the Porcupine Abyssal Plain in the Northeast Atlantic is Iosactis vagabunda, a deep-sea anemone—not a fish. A long-term time-lapse camera captured it moving and feeding, behaviors that still images had not revealed, according to a 2025 report by Indian Defence Review.
Why the time-lapse footage matters
A single photograph can show an anemone’s shape and position, but it cannot show how that position changes or what the animal does over time. The report says I. vagabunda had previously been known from still images; time-lapse observations made its gradual movement and feeding visible.
Indian Defence Review reported that researchers observed 18 individuals over 20 months, collecting images every eight hours. It also reported that one individual was monitored for two weeks at 20-minute intervals. These are figures from the 2025 report, rather than details independently confirmed here from the journal article linked by the report.
How the anemone moves
The report describes the anemone burrowing in stages, then emerging elsewhere through a mound of sediment. This is not a quick dash across the seafloor: the movement is subtle and unfolds over time, making repeated images especially useful for seeing it.

What the footage shows about feeding
According to the report, the anemone extends its tentacles into the water above it, captures drifting organic particles, and draws them toward its mouth. The observation offers a view of feeding in this particular deep-sea species; it should not be taken as evidence that all sea anemones move or feed in the same way.
Which deep-sea animal was filmed?
This Atlantic story concerns Iosactis vagabunda, an anemone on the Porcupine Abyssal Plain. It is separate from a Nautilus Live video published in September 2026 featuring Typhlonus nasus, a faceless cusk eel seen more than 5,000 meters deep in the Line Islands region. The animals, locations, and reports are different.

What the observation reveals—and what it does not
The footage illustrates how a long-running camera can reveal activity that a still image misses on an abyssal plain: slow changes in position, staged burrowing, emergence, and feeding. The account is specific to this species and observation. The journal landing page linked by the report was not accessible for independent confirmation, so the reported schedule and behaviors are best attributed to the coverage rather than presented as verified firsthand findings.
