Choose the Embark Breed ID kit if you mainly want your dog’s breed mix, ancestry and relative-matching features. Choose Breed + Health if inherited-condition screening and additional trait information matter as much as ancestry. For an adult or senior dog with an unknown history, add the separate Age Test or buy the Breed + Health and Age bundle. The Age Test is described as working best after the puppy stage.
Those choices answer different questions. Breed results describe ancestry, health results estimate genetic risk rather than diagnose disease, and age testing provides an estimate rather than a documented birth date. This guide explains what each kit includes, how the cheek-swab process works, what Embark’s published numbers mean, and where a veterinarian is still essential.

Which Embark kit should you buy?
Your goal should determine the kit, not the dog’s appearance or a temporary discount. Embark presents Breed ID and Breed + Health as separate products, and sells an Age Test separately or in a bundle with Breed + Health.

Pick Breed ID when ancestry is the whole point
Breed ID is the straightforward choice for a mixed-breed rescue, a dog whose physical traits are misleading, or a family that simply wants to understand lineage. It avoids paying for health screening you do not plan to use. Before ordering, confirm the live product page still lists the exact ancestry and relative features you want; product inclusions can change.
Pick Breed + Health when results will inform veterinary conversations
Breed + Health includes the breed-focused information and adds inherited-condition screening and other insights. Embark currently states that the kit covers 400+ breeds, types and varieties and 270+ genetic health conditions. Those are Embark’s vendor-stated counts, not independent measurements of diagnostic accuracy, and they do not mean a dog is tested for every disease that exists.
Add Age Test for an adult dog with an uncertain history
An age estimate can help with planning food, exercise, dental care and preventive visits when adoption paperwork is incomplete. It cannot establish an exact birthday. Embark’s product information says the Age Test works best for dogs past the puppy stage, so treat puppy estimates with particular caution.

What each test is designed to tell you
Breed ancestry and relatives
The breed-focused kits compare the dog’s DNA with Embark’s reference database to assign ancestry categories and provide related insights. A mixed-breed result is not a visual identification test: a dog can carry ancestry that is not obvious from coat, ears, size or behavior. Breed percentages should therefore be read as an estimate of genetic ancestry, not as a guarantee that a dog will display every characteristic associated with a breed.
Relative matching is also a database feature. A match can only appear when a genetically related dog has been tested and the service has enough information to identify that relationship. No match does not prove that your dog has no relatives; it can simply mean that relatives have not tested or are not available for matching.
Genetic health screening
Breed + Health is intended to identify inherited variants associated with conditions in Embark’s panel. Embark says it screens every dog for all the health conditions it can test, rather than restricting the panel only to the dog’s apparent breed. That does not make the panel universal: a condition may be outside the panel, newly characterized, or not relevant to the dog’s particular clinical situation.

- SCREENS 270+ GENETIC HEALTH RISKS: Find out early if your dog has a genetic risk for conditions like MDR1 (a sensitivity to common medications), degenerative myelopathy (a spinal cord disease), dilated cardiomyopathy (a heart muscle disease), or progressive retinal atrophy (a vision-loss condition). 3 in 4 tested dogs discover a health risk — know their risks early so you and your vet can plan.
- MOST ACCURATE DOG DNA TEST AVAILABLE: Identifies 400+ breeds, types, and varieties, including village dogs, so mixed-breed and rescue dogs get a real answer. Stringent quality control ensures over 99% genotyping accuracy. Embark is a research partner of the Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine, and the most often recommended dog DNA test.
- THE ONLY DOG DNA TEST WITH PERSONALIZED ALLERGY RISK SCORES: Get your dog's genetic risk across four allergy types: environmental, food, contact, and flea. It doesn't test for an active allergy, but it shows whether your dog is genetically predisposed, based on genetic data from more than 3 million dogs. Among dogs with a high allergy risk, up to 30% of dogs have more than one allergy type.
- KNOW WHAT TO EXPECT FROM 55 PHYSICAL TRAITS: See your dog's predicted adult size, coat type, shedding level, and grooming needs before they surprise you. Helpful for puppy and rescue owners deciding on food, grooming, crate size, and living space.
- BEHAVIOR INSIGHTS + TRAINING PLAN (IN-APP UPGRADE): Barking at the door or struggling when left alone? Upgrade in the Embark app to unlock 15 genetic behavior scores that show what your dog may be wired for, plus a personalized training plan built around those instincts
Embark provides a current list that can be filtered by condition category or reviewed for a selected breed. If one inherited condition is the reason you are buying, check that list before ordering:

- The breed-specific support page helps identify tests associated with a selected breed.
The result is a screening signal for inherited risk. It is not proof that the dog currently has the condition, will develop it, or is clinically affected.
Traits and allergy-risk scores
The Breed + Health listing describes additional results such as inherited traits and allergy-risk scores. These can provide context about coat, appearance or potential sensitivity, but they should not replace observation of the individual dog. A trait result does not predict every behavior, and an allergy-risk score is not a diagnosis of an environmental or food allergy.
How to interpret a health result safely
Embark’s own wording is clear: “Genetic testing is an assessment of risk, not a diagnosis.” A risk-associated result is one piece of evidence. A dog with no reported variant can still become ill, and a dog with a reported variant may remain healthy or require no treatment.
Use the result as a veterinary question
- Save the report and note the exact condition and variant description.
- Tell your veterinarian that the information came from a consumer genetic screening kit.
- Discuss whether the result fits the dog’s age, symptoms, breed background, family history and physical examination.
- Ask whether confirmatory testing, monitoring or a change in routine care is appropriate.
Do not start medication, restrict exercise, change a breeding decision or assume a prognosis solely from a consumer result. A veterinarian can decide whether a laboratory test, imaging, examination or periodic monitoring is warranted.
Check panel scope before buying
“270+ conditions” is a count of conditions screened according to Embark’s current product pages, not a count of diseases diagnosed or prevented. The practical question is whether the condition that concerns you appears in the current panel and how the result is interpreted. Use the support pages above to inspect the list rather than assuming that a breed label automatically includes every inherited problem associated with that breed.

How Embark’s cheek-swab process works
Embark’s listed workflow is simple, but each step matters because the laboratory needs an identifiable, usable sample.
- Order the kit that matches your goal. Confirm whether the product is Breed ID, Breed + Health, Age Test or the bundle. Review the live listing for current inclusions and instructions.
- Activate the kit online. Complete activation before mailing so the sample can be associated with the correct account and dog.
- Collect the cheek sample. Rub the supplied swab inside the dog’s cheek pouch and under the tongue, following the kit’s current printed directions.
- Package the sample. Use the return materials supplied with the kit and check that the package is sealed as instructed.
- Mail it to Embark. Keep the account details and tracking information available until the sample is received and processed.
- Read the report in context. Separate ancestry findings, health-risk findings, traits and any age estimate; they answer different questions.
Follow the instructions in the box you receive if they differ from a general description. The official Breed + Health listing describes this cheek-swab, online-activation and mail-in workflow at Embark’s product page.
How long do results take?
Embark gives typical, not guaranteed, processing windows. The Breed + Health product page states 2–4 weeks for results. The Breed + Health and Age bundle states separate windows: 2–4 weeks for Breed + Health and 4–5 weeks for the Age Test. The clock and any shipping time can differ, so do not plan a veterinary decision around a precise arrival date.
| Component | Embark-stated result window | How to use the estimate |
|---|---|---|
| Breed + Health | Typically 2–4 weeks | Use as a planning range after the sample is submitted, not a delivery guarantee. |
| Age Test in the bundle | Typically 4–5 weeks | Expect a separate report and a longer stated window than Breed + Health. |
| Breed ID | Not stated in the supplied product details | Check the current Breed ID listing before ordering. |
Age testing: useful estimate, not a birthday certificate
Rescue dogs often arrive with an approximate age based on teeth, size, coat, eyes or shelter experience. Those clues can be helpful but are not a documented birth record. The Age Test offers another estimate, which may help you choose an adult or senior-care plan when records are missing.
Why life stage matters
Embark says the Age Test works best for dogs past the puppy stage. Puppy development changes rapidly, so an estimate made during that period should not be treated as equivalent to an adult estimate. For an adult or older dog, use the result as one input alongside dental findings, medical history, body condition and your veterinarian’s examination.
What the bundle does and does not combine
The bundle does not turn the age estimate into a health diagnosis or make the two reports a single measurement. Breed + Health and Age Test are separate components with separate result windows. A bundle is convenient when you want all three categories of information, but it is not necessary if you only need ancestry or only want an age estimate.

- Estimates Your Dog's Age And Birthday From DNA: Uses DNA methylation, a biological clock in your dog's genes, to give you an estimated age and birthday. 77% of dogs have a true birthday within 12 months of their estimated birthday
- Built For Rescue And Unknown-History Dogs: If you adopted a dog with no papers and no known birthday, this is made for you. Best for dogs past the puppy stage, when age is hardest to judge by looks alone
- Includes Life-Stage Appropriate Care Information: Your results come with life stage information developed by veterinarians. A dog's social, behavioral, and health needs change with age, and knowing their estimated life stage helps you keep up
- Simple At-Home Cheek Swab With 2-Way Shipping: Swab your dog's cheek, register online, and mail it back with the prepaid label in the box. No vet visit or blood draw needed. Results arrive 4-5 weeks after the lab receives your sample

Accuracy, database size and evidence limits
Embark’s current pages advertise a database spanning more than 400 breeds, types and varieties and screening for more than 270 genetic health conditions. These figures describe the scope Embark says it offers. They do not independently verify how accurately every breed assignment performs for every mixed-breed dog, nor do they establish the clinical predictive value of every health marker.
Embark has also used high breed-ancestry accuracy language in marketing. No independent accuracy statistic is established in the available product information here, so treat such language as an Embark claim rather than a peer-reviewed guarantee. A result can be scientifically useful while still requiring interpretation: reference populations, closely related breeds, mixed ancestry and the limits of a particular genetic marker all affect what a report can say.
Questions the test can answer reasonably well
- Which ancestry signals are detected in the tested sample?
- Which listed inherited variants were or were not detected in the panel?
- Which traits and database relatives are reported by the service?
- For an eligible adult dog, what age estimate does the Age Test provide?
Questions it cannot answer by itself
- What is the dog’s exact date of birth?
- Is the dog currently sick or guaranteed to stay healthy?
- Will a dog develop a condition solely because a risk-associated variant was reported?
- What treatment, diet, exercise plan or medication is appropriate without veterinary assessment?
- What percentage of a dog’s behavior is caused by one breed component?
Choosing by real-world situation
Scenario: a mixed-breed puppy
Choose Breed ID if the family’s priority is ancestry. Breed + Health can add inherited-risk information, but avoid using the Age Test as a precise developmental clock because Embark says age testing works best past the puppy stage. Discuss any health finding with the puppy’s veterinarian rather than changing vaccination, parasite or nutrition plans based only on DNA.
Scenario: an adult rescue with no records
The Breed + Health and Age bundle is the broadest fit when you need ancestry, inherited-risk screening and an age estimate. Use the age result to support planning, not to overwrite shelter records or a veterinary examination. If cost or scope makes a bundle unnecessary, start with the specific question that would change care most.
Scenario: a dog with a suspected inherited problem
First inspect Embark’s current condition list and breed-specific information. If the condition is included, Breed + Health may provide useful screening information. If the condition is not listed, a negative Embark report cannot rule it out; ask your veterinarian about an appropriate clinical test.
Scenario: a healthy purebred dog
Breed ID may add little if documented pedigree is already available. Breed + Health can still be relevant when you want a broad inherited-risk screen, but use the current panel list to confirm that the conditions important to your breed are included. A purebred label does not make a consumer report a substitute for veterinary care or specialist screening.

Costs, availability and what to verify before checkout
Prices, discounts, stock and included features are volatile. The available product information does not establish a single current price, so check the live official pages immediately before buying:
- Embark’s main dog DNA listing for the current Breed ID and related options.
- The Breed + Health listing for current health features and turnaround wording.
- The Breed + Health and Age Test bundle page for its current contents and separate timing.
At checkout, verify the exact kit name, whether the Age Test is a separate component, the destination to which the sample must be mailed, and any regional availability terms. Do not assume that a sale price or a previously seen feature list is still active.
Common buying and interpretation mistakes
Buying the cheapest kit when health information is the goal
Breed ID is not the health-screening option. If inherited-risk information is the reason for testing, select Breed + Health and confirm the current panel rather than expecting an upgrade from Breed ID.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
Assuming “negative” means disease-free
A negative result means that the tested variant or condition was not reported in the panel. It does not rule out every genetic change, every disease, or non-genetic causes. Continue routine preventive care.
Treating a risk result as a diagnosis
Bring the exact report to your veterinarian. Symptoms, examination, family history and confirmatory testing determine whether the result matters clinically.
Expecting an exact age
An Age Test estimate cannot supply a verified birth date. For puppies, the stated “works best past the puppy stage” caveat is especially important.
Assuming the breed panel covers every breed-specific disease
Review the current Embark condition list and breed-specific page. Embark tests for the conditions it can test in its panel, but no consumer panel covers every possible disorder.

Use the stated windows as ranges: 2–4 weeks for Breed + Health and 4–5 weeks for the Age Test in the bundle. Shipping and processing circumstances can affect when a report actually appears.
A practical pre-purchase checklist
- Write down the question you need answered: ancestry, inherited risk, age, or all three.
- For ancestry only, compare the current Breed ID listing with your needs.
- For health screening, inspect the current condition list and note which findings you would discuss with your veterinarian.
- For age, confirm that the dog is past the puppy stage or accept that the estimate may be less useful.
- Check current price, discount, availability and included features on the official product page.
- Plan for the stated processing windows and avoid promising a precise result date to adopters or family members.
- After results arrive, separate ancestry, traits, health-risk and age information instead of treating the report as one overall score.
Bottom line
Breed ID is the sensible purchase for a breed-and-relative question. Breed + Health is the broader choice when inherited-risk screening will be discussed with a veterinarian, with Embark currently listing 400+ breeds, types and varieties and 270+ genetic health conditions. The Age Test or the bundle can help estimate the age of an adult rescue dog, but it is not an exact birthday record and is not described as ideal for puppies. In every case, use the current official listing for price and features, and treat health findings as risk information rather than a diagnosis.
