An emergency vet is the right first call when your pet may be critically ill, injured, unstable, or at risk of worsening quickly. Urgent care is generally for a significant problem that needs prompt attention but does not appear life-threatening. If you are unsure which applies, call your veterinarian or a local emergency animal hospital and follow its triage advice.
Emergency vet or urgent care: how to choose
Think about how serious the symptoms are, how quickly your pet needs to be assessed, and whether the clinic can provide the care needed. The labels alone do not guarantee a particular clinic’s hours, appointment process, diagnostics, or ability to stabilize a critically ill animal. Call the location to confirm its services and whether it wants you to call before arriving.
| Situation | Best first step | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Severe, potentially life-threatening, unstable, or rapidly worsening symptoms | Contact an emergency animal hospital now | Emergency facilities handle problems that may need immediate assessment or stabilization. [VCA emergency care] |
| An important problem that needs prompt attention but does not appear to be an emergency | Ask a local urgent-care clinic whether it can see your pet | Urgent care may be an option when a primary-care appointment is not available. VCA describes its own urgent-care service as offering same- or next-day appointments; that is not a guarantee for every clinic. [VCA urgent care] |
| You cannot tell how serious the problem is | Call your regular veterinarian; if unavailable, call an emergency animal hospital | A veterinary team can advise whether your pet should be examined and where to go. [FDA guidance] |
When to contact an emergency vet
Seek veterinary guidance promptly for signs that may indicate a critical or unstable condition. Examples listed by VCA include severe accidents or trauma, suspected toxic ingestion, shock, broken bones, trouble breathing or choking, profuse bleeding, seizures, collapse or non-responsiveness, paralysis, pale gums, a weak or rapid pulse, and extreme pain or temperature. These are warning signs, not a diagnostic checklist; do not wait to see whether a severe symptom passes before contacting a veterinary team. [VCA emergency care] [VCA emergency-clinic guidance]
When urgent care may be appropriate
Urgent care can be suitable when your pet has a problem that needs prompt attention but appears stable and non-emergent, especially if your regular veterinarian cannot offer an appointment soon enough. The clinic must still be able to assess the specific problem. Ask about its hours, appointment availability, services, and whether it recommends urgent care or an emergency hospital based on the symptoms you describe. VCA advertises same- or next-day appointments and 24/7 teletriage for its urgent-care service; other providers may operate differently. [VCA urgent care]
What to do if you are unsure
- Call your regular veterinarian. Your clinic can advise you about your pet’s symptoms and its after-hours process. The FDA says your veterinarian is the best resource when a pet has an emergency. [FDA guidance]
- If your clinic is unavailable, call a local emergency animal hospital. The FDA notes that an emergency hospital may offer advice by phone or recommend an examination. Describe the symptoms and when they began, and follow the team’s instructions. [FDA guidance]
- For severe symptoms, do not substitute an online search or a product for veterinary contact. Call an emergency veterinary team and follow its directions.
If you suspect poisoning
Call a veterinarian quickly if your pet may have eaten or been exposed to something toxic. If your regular veterinarian cannot be reached, the FDA lists a local emergency animal hospital or a U.S. animal poison-control center as options for urgent advice. The FDA page lists ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center at 1-888-426-4435 and Pet Poison Helpline at 1-855-764-7661; confirm current contact details and any applicable fees when you call. [FDA guidance]
