Emmanuel is an emu at Knuckle Bump Farms in South Florida, where Taylor Blake films educational videos about the farm’s animals. In the clips that made them famous, Emmanuel steps into the shot and pecks at or investigates the camera, interrupting Blake mid-explanation. Her exasperated “Emmanuel, don’t do it!” became the moment’s catchphrase.
Who is Emmanuel?
Emmanuel lives at Knuckle Bump Farms, a South Florida hobby farm. Taylor Blake films and narrates many of the farm’s animal videos, including the educational clips in which Emmanuel repeatedly wanders into frame. NPR’s July 18, 2022 report describes him getting close to the camera and pecking at it as Blake tries to continue speaking. NPR’s account of Emmanuel and the videos and The Independent’s July 2022 coverage captured the interruptions that spread online.

Why did the videos catch on?
The appeal was the simple, repeatable clash between Blake’s attempt to explain something and Emmanuel’s sudden arrival to investigate the phone or camera. Blake would scold him with lines including, “Emmanuel, don’t do it. Emmanuel, don’t choose violence today,” as heard in NPR’s transcript. The familiar interruption and catchphrase made the clips easy to recognize and share.

One of them is phones, and the other one is buttons,” according to WESH 2’s July 19, 2022 report. That is her humorous description of their running gag, not an established explanation of emu behavior or Emmanuel’s motives.

How did Emmanuel’s viral moment unfold?
July 2022: clips spread widely
The videos drew national attention in July 2022. NPR reported on July 18, describing Blake’s educational TikToks and the emu’s camera interruptions.
July 21–22, 2022: a Tonight Show puppet cameo
Blake appeared in a segment with Jimmy Fallon, who echoed the catchphrase: “Emmanuel, no, don’t do it. You’re being a menace!” The real emu stayed in Florida; a puppet represented him in the studio. The Los Angeles Times reported on the segment.

October 2022: avian-influenza outbreak at the farm
In October 2022, the farm faced a serious avian-influenza outbreak. KPBS/NPR reported on October 17 that more than 50 birds had died and Emmanuel was seriously ill at that time. That is a dated report, not an update on his present health. Read the contemporaneous KPBS/NPR report.

What is known about Emmanuel and the farm now?
Knuckle Bump Farms’ current About Us page describes it as a small South Florida hobby farm specializing in miniature cattle, identifies it as home of Emmanuel Todd Lopez, and says it is closed to the public. Its website and store confirm how the farm currently presents itself, but they do not provide a dated veterinary update that establishes Emmanuel’s health status. The October 2022 illness report should therefore not be treated as current news—or as proof of a later recovery. See the farm’s About Us page.
