The headline refers to a 17 September 2017 PerthNow report about recreational fishers describing great white sharks approaching and striking their boats near Esperance. It is a historical account, not a verified current warning for Wylie Bay, Kelp Beds, or local beachgoers. For conditions today, check official alerts for the specific beach and date.
What happened in the 2017 report?
PerthNow reporter Rochelle Tetlow reported that recreational fishers said great white sharks had approached boats at Wylie Bay and near the Kelp Beds surf break. One pair described a shark bumping a burley bucket; another said a shark struck and bit their boat. The reported sizes were the fishers’ estimates, not independently verified measurements. PerthNow, 17 September 2017
The report also recorded local concern that surfers and beachgoers might not know about shark activity offshore. Shark expert and filmmaker David Riggs sought a prominent warning sign, and an electronic sign was being taken to the area at the time. Those details describe the 2017 response, not current beach conditions. PerthNow
Does the report mean sharks are near Esperance beaches now?
No. A news report about encounters in 2017 cannot establish current shark activity or present-day risk at Wylie Bay, Kelp Beds, or another beach. Shark reports and alerts are time- and location-specific, so use current official information rather than treating an old account as an active warning.

How to check current shark information in Esperance
- Check the WA Government’s SharkSmart activity page for reported sightings and tagged-shark detections. Read the date and location attached to each notice; an alert for another beach is not automatically an alert for Wylie Bay or Kelp Beds.
- Check local beach information and follow any warnings or directions in place. The Shire of Esperance’s Shark Hazard Response policy distinguishes verified sightings—based on detections through the WA Government Shark Monitoring Network—from unverified reports forwarded from Water Police. Responses vary by beach category; patrolled beaches follow Surf Life Saving WA procedures.
- For a shark sighting, WA official guidance says to call Water Police on 9442 8600. SharkSmart; WA Government reporting guidance
When accessed for this article, SharkSmart listed an advice notice dated 29 May 2026 for Plumpudding Beach, west of Esperance. That dated notice concerns a different location and should not be read as a current warning for Wylie Bay or Kelp Beds. SharkSmart activity page
What is known about Esperance’s warning towers?
The Shire’s policy describes warning-tower arrangements at Kelp Beds, West Beach, and Twilight Beach. A 2020 WA Government statement said the towers could be activated following tagged-shark detections or sighting reports in nearby areas. That statement documents the infrastructure at the time; it does not confirm that every tower is operating now. Check current Shire information for operational details. Fishing rule relevant to Esperance Jetty
A WA Government notice published 20 September 2024 said wire-trace gear would be prohibited at Esperance Jetty and within its specified buffer from 1 October 2024, while ordinary line fishing without wire trace remained permitted. The notice said the restriction did not extend to other Esperance beaches or jetties. Because fishing rules can change, check current DPIRD guidance before relying on this for a fishing trip.
